Soprano Carolyn Heafner
Sings A Tribute To
Poetess Emily Dickinson
Internationally acclaimed
soprano Carolyn Heafner, a
native of North Carolina,
whose program, “The Poetess
Sings • A Tribute to Emily
Dickinson,” has been chosen
by The Library of Congress as
our • country’s com
memoration of the ISOth
anniversary of the birth of
America’s greatest lyric poet,
will be presented in Raleigh at
Meredith College on Monday,
November 10. The program
will take place in the Jones
Auditorium at 10 a.m. as part
of a statewide Homecoming
Tour during November, prior
to its presentation at The
Library of Congress in
Washington on December 9,
honoring the eve of Emily
Dickinson’s birth on
December 10, 1830.
This deeply moving
homage to a unique woman
whose genius was
unrecognized in her lifetime,
has been created by Miss
Heafner as ai theatre piece - a
mosaic of the life, the letters,
the poems, and their musical
settings by major American
composers, among them
Aaron Copland, Otto Luening,
and Ernest Bacon. In an ex
traordinary fusion of music
and poet^, the two arts
enhance each other, the music
evoking an emotional
response and illuminating the
subtle poetry, to reveal the
power and the grandeur of
Emily Dickinson’s defiant
spirit. In her selection of
musical settings, Miss
Heafner has chosen com
posers in tlw mainstream of
music who have in common an
aesthetic affinity for the truly
great poets.
Carolyn Heafner, born and
brought up in Lincolnton,
North Carolina, graduated
from the University of North
Carolina at Greensboro, and
went on for advanced study at
the University of Texas in
Austin. While there she
became a regional winner of
the Metropolitan Opera’s
Auditions and a Scholarsh^-
Award Winner of the
Metropolitan Opera’s
National Auditions which
brought her to New York as a
member of Ae Metropolitan
Opera Studio and launched a
distinguished international
career in opera. She has
performed with the Santa Fe
Opera, the Opera Theater of
Northern Vi^inia, and the
Lake George Opera, among,
others in the United States.
For five years she sang
leading roles at the Bremen
Opera Company in West
Germany, with guest perfor
mances throughout Europe,
receiving extraordinary
acclaim for her exquisite lyric
soprano voice, her compelling
stage presence, and her
superb musicidnship. Equally
distinguished is her career as
soloist in oratorio and with
symphony orchestras. She has
performed with the North
Carolina Symphony, the
Queens Symphony, the New
Hampshire Festival Or

SGA passes new closing hours proposal
At the Friday, October 31,
SGA meeting the following
legislation was passed by the
students. The legislation must
now be presented to and ap
proved by the Student Life
Committee, Dr. Sandra
Thomas, Vice President of
Student Development and Dr.
John Weems, President of the
College.
CLOSING HOURS
Meredith’s closing hours
are as follows: Sunday-
Thursday, 1:00 a.m.; Friday-
Saturday, 2:00 a.m.
At these times the
residence halls are locked to
insure the protection of the
students in the residence
halls. As a further safety
measure, no students are
allowed to leave the resi(l^nce
halls after closing hours.'
Freshmen leaving
campus, who plan to return on
that day must do so by closing

permission to remain off

should make their requests
directly to the resident ad
visor oh duty who may grant
this permission.

If approved,'this change
would become effective as of
January 12, 1981.
The Student Rights and
Resolutions Committee of
Legislative Board proposes
the following change that
would eliminate freshmen
lates. The committee feels
this change is necessary for
the following reasons:
1. Security guards can
better patrol the entire
campus if they don’t have to
run a two-way path between
Johnson Hall and the Fresh
men dorms between 12
midnight and 1:00 a.m. on
Sunday-Thursday nights.
2. The committee feels it is
necessary to eliminate the
paperwork . that lates
necessitates since freshmen
are not coming in until 1:00
a.m. if they desire.
3. The committee feels that
all girls can feel secure in the
dorms on Sunday-Thursday
nights if the dorms are not
locked until 1:00 a.m., since
the dorms are not lock^ until
2:00 a.m. on Friday and
Saturday nights, and there are
fewer girls on campus on the
weekends.
4. Freshmen have the
-privilege of remaining off
campus until 2:00 a.m. on.
Friday-Saturday nights if they
choose; therefore, the com
mittee feels that there would
be less confusion by
eliminating lates and locking
the dorms at 1:00 a.m. on
Sunday-Thursday nights. The
freshmen do not have to sign
out for lates on the weekend,
so why should they have to
sign out during the week?
The committee does not
want to do away with the fact
