Meredith golf team wins state championship
by Daria Stephenson
On Saturday and Sunday,
November 15 and 16, the
Meredith Golf Team traveled
to Pinehurst where they won
the NCAIAW State Cham
pionship on Course No. 1 of the
Pinehurst Country Club.
It was the third time in the
history of the school in which
Meredith had team members
who qualified for the State
Tournament. It was the
second time in which
Meredith had the entire team
to qualify for the tournament.
The Meredith squad w(m
the NCAIAW title with a 2-day
team score of 70B strokes,
hounded by a tough UNC-
Wilmington with 709 strokes.
Coach Fred Thompson
believed the team’s per
formance was an “out
standing example of what a
golf team should be. Each girl
out there did what she had to
do.”
Although the first day of
the tournam^t,was played in
drizzling rain, the Angels
finished with a team score of
358, a 7 stroke lead over UNC-
W, the chief contender for the
tide, and with Sophomore
Kathy Reibsamen placed
SMond in individuals. Not a
bad start! Kathy led the team
with a low score of 87, followed
by Peggy Williford with 88,
Susan Wrenn 89, and Rebecca
Baucom with 94.
Sunday was a little drier,
but gusUng winds and ex
tremely cold weather set in.
On the first four holes,
Meredith lost its 7 stroke
advantage and was now ti^
with UNC-W.
Coach Thompson
described the day’s events as
“one of the most tense days
we’ve ever spent.” By the 16th
tee, Meredith had to play par
golf in order to win the
tournament. And they did!
Thompson remarked that
playing par golf on that
stretch “pleased me more
than anything else”
Again, the Angels beat
UNC-W by 1 stroke. While
Katl^ Reibsamen was the low
scorer for the team, Thomp
son points out that it was “a
combined effort” of each
player, for each player came
through for the team when
needed.
Kathy tied for second
place in the individual com
petition, forcing her to go into
sudden death against UNC-
W’s Donna Barnett. Barnett
victorious, Kathy finished
third in individuals.
For Meredith, the 1980-81
team produced the lowest 2-
day aggregate team' score
ever. Furthermore, Sunday’s
team total was 350~the lowest
team total in the school’s
history.
. As for individual scores,
the score of each team
member was lower than the
score of any one member who
had previously participated in
the State Tournament. Kathy
Reibsamen, Peggy Williford,
and Rebecca Baucom were
named to the All Division III
State Tournament All Star
Team.
|fap|iy Holidays!
Because of Meredith’s
victory at the State Tour
nament as well as second
place in the regionals, tiie
school will likely get a bid to
the nationals in June.
However, Meredith golfers
are already preparing for the
spring schedule with the Duke
Spring Invitational and the
William and Mary In
vitational on the agenda.
Coach Thompson con
cluded that he “couldn’t say
enough about these girls.” He
looks at the NCAIAW
Championship as a turning
point in the program at
Meredith. Thompson at
tributes much of the tarn’s
success to Sam Brewer, Head
Pro^ and Billy Newton,
Assistant Pro at Raleigh
Country Club. He feels that
these two as well as access to
the course there had a
“profound effect on the girl’s
play this year.”
