by Linda Seilers
Seven resident students at
Meredith have a very special
reason for celebrating their
heritage next week.
The seven black
students will take part with
the rest of the campus in
Black Emphasis Week
February 9-13 on the Meredith
campus. Black Voices in
Unity is sponsoring the event,
with Ella Branch as tlw
student co-ordinator.
Several guest speakers
and other activities are
planned for the week. Dr.
Carolyn Bennett, publisher
and editor of The Network of
North Carolina Women, will
be the guest speaker for the
opening convocation on
February 9. Dr. Bennett has
worked in the field of
education for many years and
has an acute interest in
opportunities and recognition
for women. Meredith students
will have the chance to
informally talk to Dr. Bennett
after convocation.
“The convocation on
Monday featuring Carolyn
Bennett should be interesting
to Meredith students to hear
the success story of a fellow
woman career person,”
commented Cynthia
Washington, publicity
chairman for Black Voices in
Unity.
Other activities during the
week include a dance group
production entitled Through
Our Eyes: Portrait of the
Black Woman, a gospel sing
on Tuesday, a special
Wednesday worship service in
the rotunda, and black poetry
readings on Friday.
“In celebration of the
contributions that Black
Americans have made to
American history, which have
long gone unnoticed. BW is
sponsoring Black Emphasis
Week,” said Cynthia
Washington. “We hope you
will come to learn and be
entertained with us.”

English department searches for new head
by Heidi Nill
A shift of responsibility is
underway in the Meredith
English Department. After
serving for thirteen years as
department head, Dr. Norma
Rose is stepping down. Dr.
Rose, who has been teaching
at Meredith for forty-four
years, is not retiring,
however. She will continue to
teach at Meredith after
leaving her position as head of
the department.
The search for a new
department head was begun
late last summer. Dean Burris
asked the English
Department for nominations
and applications for the
position. Dr. lone Knight is a
candidate; another candi^te
was interviewed last week,
and more will be interviewed
in the coming weeks.
In the process of finding a
new department head. Dean
Allen Burris takes suggestions
from the departments in
question. Then he begins the
search. Candidates are
interviewed by the President
of the College, Dean Burris,
faculty, and students. The
Dean makes a
recommendation to the
President, who, if in
agreement, takes the
suggestion to the Board of
Trustees, who makes the final
decision.
