R.G. Puckett speaks on the moral majority by Ann Stringfield “Moral Majority proponents feel they are tte last great hope for America.’’ So said the Reverend Mr. R. G. Puckett speaking to an attentive audience at SGA, September 18. Puckett is the leader of a political lobby which advocates separation of church and state. The New Right “has married God-talk and flag waving... the Bible and public policy in a shogun wedding to achieve through politics what couldn’t be done with the gospel.” Puckett named people such as Jerry Falwell, Bill Bright and Jim Bakker as ringleaders in the attempt to legislate morality. Acknowledging that there are “many who share the concerns of the Moral Majority,” Puckett states that “soul liberty” is a vital principle of wUch we must not lose sight. “We cannot change society by legally imposed sectarian values.” Puckett identified the Falwellian type as a person who feels that “an attitude on a political position either makes you a Christian or not a Christian.” The tactics of those in the Moral Majority are not, according to Puckett, tactics befitting those professing to be representatives of God. Puckett concluded by saying that a free church and a free state is the best arrangement for all concerned. Don Ellington to retire on September 30 by Ann Stringfield Mr. Don Ellington, Meredith’s audio engineer since 1969, will retire September 30. Mr. Ellington states that he is retiring to “take life a little easier.” Weekend activities at Meredith have often interferred with his plans to visit with his grandchildren and Mr. Ellington wishes to remedy that situation. At the age of 78, Mr. Ellington feels it is time to relax. Mr. Ellington came to Meredith in 1969 after retiring as income tax auditor with the N.C. Department of Revenue. He is responsible for the installment of the sound systems in Belk Dining Hall, Jones Auditorium and the portable system often used at the amphitheater. Although there have been some embarrassing moments when the equipment malfunctioned, Mr. Ellington says his years at Mer^ith have been a lot of fun. “I’ve always had a warm spot in my heart for Meredith because of my daughter who graduated in ‘58.” Well, Mr. Ellington, Meredith will always have a warm spot in her heart for you.
