HAPPY HALLOWEEN November Convocation: William Hamilton by Lisa Sorrels What can a witty cartoonist and author who grew up in Palo Alto, California have to say about the foibles of the eastern upper crust? William Hamilton, playwright and cartoonist for many magazines - inlcuding The New Yorker, will speak on the topic “20th cilentury American Humor” on Monday, November 2, in Jones Auditorium at 10 a.m. The NovemberConvocation comes midway between the September publication of his novel. The Love of Rich Women, and the January productions of two of his plays. Happy Landings and The Wedding Chest. Hamilton grew up in California’s Napa Valley and was educated at Andover and Yale, where he received his B.A. in English in 1962. He served in the Army for two years (stationed in Alaska) before becoming a cartoonist. In 1966 he assisted Director John Huston in the film Reflections in a Golden Eye. Since then he has written and produced five plays and several books, including Money Should Be Fun. The artist’s cartoons appear in numerous newspapers through the Universal Syndicate (which includes the Raleigh Times) as well as magazines such as The New Yorker and Gourmet. As both writer and cartoonist Hamilton is famous for his wit. He has a good ear for dialogue and easily sees through the corporate bombasts and the young stylist set. The captions of his ' cartoons pronounce the punchlines thus causing some to call the cartoon more “literary” than visi’al. One reviewer has said that Hamilton’s latest novel should elicit the same type of laughter as the writing of Evelyn Waugh and P. G. Wodehouse. For his latest pronouncements on modern American humor, see him at the November Convocation. Who will rise in Cornhuskin^ ^81?
