NORTH CAROLINA 276H NOVEMBER 4. 1981 Richard Dudman at Meredith College Richard Dudman Richard Dudman retired on April 1, 1981 from his position as prize-winning chief Washington correspondent of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He had covered foreign and national affairs for the newspaper for the past 27 years. His foreign assignments have taken him around the world 10 times, have included a dozen wars and revolutions, and involved two brushes with death in Cambodia. He is now chairman of the board, Dudman Communications Corporation, owner and operator of radio stations WDEA and WDEA-FM, Ellsworth, Maine. A terrorist fired at him three times at close range in Decmeber 1978 and killed a British scholar in the same government house the final night of their two-week visit to the country. Eight years earlier, he was captured and held prisoner several weeks by Communist guerrillas in Cambodia. On assignments abroad, he often carried two Leicas and several times has produced illustrated series of aritcles that have been widely syndicated in major newspapers in the United States and abroad. Among those assignments have been his trip to Cambodia, as one of the first two Western reporters to visit that country since the Comunist victory of April 27,1975, and two trips to Hanoi -- in 1972, for a tour of North Vietnam at the height of the U.S. bombing, and in 1977, for the first full report by an American correspondent on the situation in postwar Vietnam. For his 1978 series on Cambodia, he received the Edward Weintal Award. For the first Hanoi series, he won the 1972 award of the Overseas Press Club of America for the “Best Article or Report on' Asia, Any Medium." ' Dudman was captured with two other reporters in 1970. when covering the start of the U.S. invasion of Cambodia. To cheer up his companions, he told them, “If we get out of this alive, we’ll have one hell of a good story.” When they eventually were released, he wrote a series of articles that was published in the Post-Dispatch and in many other newspapers around the world. He later wrote a book about the experience, “40 Days with the Enemy” (Liveright, 1971). He has visit^ China seven times, starting with the first Nixon trip in 1972. He returned there a few months later for another 26 days and wrote a series of articles. Dudman's foreign reporting began with an assignment to cover the Jewish displaced persons’ camps in Europe in 1947. as a reporter for the Denver Post. He accompanied a group on the first phase of a journey to Palestine, assuming the identity of a Polish-Jewish displaced person to avoid detection by French and British security officials at checkpoints on the route from West Germany to the Mediterranean coast. Speak afterwards on topic, “The U.S. an.l the Soviet Union- After Detente, What?” Contact person, Lisa Pom.er (student) Helen Sloane Dudman is President and Chief Kxecutive Officer of the Dudman Communications ('orporation, licensees of WDEA and WDEA-FM, Ellsworth, Maine. Mrs. Dudham purchased the stations in May, 1980. She was formerly Public Information Director of the Public Broadcasting Service and earlier Vice President for Public Information for WETA Radio and Television, the public broadcasting stations' in Washington, D. C. Mrs. Dudman began her broadcasting career with the Post-Newsweek Stations. She was public relations director for Post-Newsweek. She joined the braodcasting group, a division of The Washington Post Company, after serving as executive women’s editor of The Washington Post. Mrs. Dudman is a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern UiiiVersity. Mime performance at Meredith The TOUCH Irio came together in 1976, became affiliated with the Art School in 1977, and has been performing from Maine to Mississippi ever since. They will be presenting u workshop on November 4 in Jones Auditorium at 6:(H) p.m. There will be a limit of 50 (Xirticipants, but others may observe. This workshop is a luilf-hour performance, followed by questions from the audience. The nature of the (|uestions will determine (he direction and scope of the workshop in which people learn mime by doing it.
