Meredith senior
Queen of Tobaeeoland
Celia Horne
by Judy Chandler
“It was the most
wonderful week of my life!”
says Meredith Senior Celia
Horne of the recent Tobacco
Festival in Richmond,
Virginia. Miss Horne was
crowned 1982 Queen of
Tobaeeoland at halftime of the
Tobacco Bowl football game
between the University of
Richmond and East Carolina
on Saturday, October 10. That
evening, she reigned over the
Grand Ball at the John
Marshall Hotel.
Miss Horne and seventeen
other Tobacco Princesses
from four tobacco producing
states attended luncheons,
teas, interviews, fashion
shows and receptions during
the four day competition.
Celia was awarded first place
in the talent competition for
her spunky rendition of the
song and dance number
‘Honeybun’ from the Rodgers
and Hamm'erstein musical
“South Pacific”. She later
repeated her performance a
capella while attending a
concert when the “concert”
didn’t show up.
The prize that Miss Horne
seems to be most proud of is a
three piece set of luggage.
“It’s beautiful,” she exclaims.
Along with the luggage, Celia
received $2500 cash, a $12S
talent award, and numerous
silver bowls and cups. Her
sponsors. Peoples Bank and
Trust and the Rocky McMint
Board of Trade, gave her a
heart-shaped diamond ring.
As Queen of Tobaeeoland,
Miss Horne will represent
Philip Morris, Inc. at the
Kentucky Derby and the
United States Tobacco
Industry at Greenbriar resort.
She will also travel to the
Canadian Tobacco Festival
and tour the twenty-two
tobacco producing states in
the U.S.
The most outstanding
event of the Festival for Miss
Horne was the illuminated
parade on Friday evening.
She waved for three hours
from a Honda Prelude to the
children who lined the streets.
“I loved it,” she smiled. “One
little girl even asked for my
autograph. I was so excited.”
Upon returning to Third
Barefoot late Sunday evening,
Celia was greeted by a group
of excited friends and a door
decorated in true Meredith
fashion. The doorway was
adorned with bows and
steamers of toilet paper and
plastered with cigarette
advertisements clipped from
magazines.
Miss Horne would like to
thank everyone at Meredith
College for their support
throughout her reign as Queen
of Tobaeeoland.
Lesa Rene Seay, a senior
here at Meredith, is the
reigning 1981 North Carolina
Apple Queen. Lesa was
crowned queen Thursday
August 27,1961 by the retiring
Apple Queen, Gayle Miller of
Hendersonville.
Lesa rode in the King
Apple Parade on September 7.
■North Carolina Apple Queen-
Riding in parades is only part
of her duties as Apple Queen.
She will represent Henderson
County apple industry at
various events throughout
North Carolina in the coming
year.
Lesa was chosen from a
field of fifteen contestants
from all over North Carolina.
Interest
(CMitinued from Page 2)
relative price of energy in
1974.
There is no reason for us
to be afraid of higher prices
- for money. We can, and will,
adjust to them by shifting
economic resources, in the
same way we have adjusted to
higher energy prices. That is
what markets do best. The U.
S., unfortunately, inflicted
many injuries on itself when
its leaders refused to face up
to the higher cost of fuel.
Politicians and the public,
with their morbid fear of high
interest, may repeat the
mistake.
After Lesa was chosen as
queen, she and her court were
honored at the Apple Festival
Coronation Ball on Saturday,
August 29.
Lesa is majoring in
business administratipn here
at Meredith. She is a member
of the Tomorrow’s Business
Women’s Club; second vice
president of the American
Society of Personnel
Administration; a member of
the business department’s
Student Advisory Board; a
member of Delta Mu Delta,
the national honor society for
business majors; a member of
Psi Chi, the national honor
society for psychology majors
and minors; secretary of the
Senior Class of 1982; and a
little Sister of the Sigma Chi
Fraternity.
