THE TWIG Newapmpmr of thm Studenta mf MmreditU Collggc VOL. LX, NO. 11 RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA 27611 DECEMBER 9. 1981 Fall Silver Shield inductions held by Jiil Kibler Silver Shield, the honorary leadership sociefy on campus, inducted ten new full members and three associate.members at its fall induction ceremony on Sunday, November 22,1981. In existence since 1935, Silver Shield fosters a good spirit on campus and recognizes outstanding students who have contributed to life at Meredith. The ten senior members inducted were Judy Andrews, Carla Barker, Judy Chandler, Mary Lynn Hinsley, Jan Meares, Kay Murphy, Lynn Powell, Alisa Robertson, Eiko Sato, and Judy Wilkerson. The three associate junior members invited to join were Virginia Gentry, Joni Parker, and Mary Stone. Present Silver Shield members and the faculty select new members on the basis of Christian character, constructive leadership, service to the school, and scholarship. The induction ceremony was carried out in a new way this year. "The whole idea was to make the inductees feel honored, sort of as a reward for all they’ve done. We did want it to be a more serious ceremony,” explained Glenda Morgan, Silver Shield president. The ten present members of Silver Shield wore black robes and carried candles. They went room by room picking up the new members •• giving them a robe to wear and a candle to carry. Glenda stated that the robes and candles “made the ceremony a lot more visible to people.” The new inductees were not informed of what was going on until the procession of old and new members reached the Alumnae House. Once in the Alumnae House, each new member was presented with her invitation to join and a maroon ribbon to wear. These ribbons were symbolic of the school’s appreciation for all the inductees had done and contributions made thus far at Meredith. After the ceremony, old and new members enjoyed a fondue party. Jan Meares said she felt “honored and extremely surprised” upon being inducted into Silver Shield. “The selection process is something the whole campus doesn't know about. Then, suddenly they’re at your door,” she said. Kay Murphy was also surprised about her induction. “I was so shocked that I would be included in what I felt is the greatest group of girls on campus,” Kay explained. The ceremony also proved rewarding for old members. Laney Edwards, who coordinated the whole induction ceremony related CP&li increases output CP&L is branching out! Meredith’s favorite entertainers have written some of their own songs which they are in the process of copyrighting. They also have plans of recording an album ■ and giving several spring concerts. CP&L, better known as Cindy Mays, Patrice Strifert, and Lynn Moss, began with only two members: Patrice and Lynn. This twosome, quickly becoming popular with students, grew to a threesome in 1980 when Cindy joined the Meredith staff. The name CP&L, given as a jdce in (CMitlnued on Page 3) that “making plans for inductions was most exciting, but the greatest thrill came when we (the old Silver Shield members) got to witness the expressions of excitement on the faces of the new members. I suppose that we could all remember the good feeling we had when we were inducted, and it felt great to see that same feeling being shared.” SILVER SHIELD • Front Row: Elko Sato, Kelley Stone. The Business Policy Class, composed of senior business majors, raised the money through the sale of Cornhuskin’ bumper stickers. “I think it’s marvelous. It was such a surprise,” commented Dr. Frazier. This gift was the first contribution from present Meredith students to go towards the building project. After clearing a profit from the sale of the bumper stickers, the Business Policy Class voted to give the extra money to the Department of Business and Economics. “We wanted to show our appreciation in some way to the Meredith Business and Economics Department for all they’ve done to prepare us for our futures,” stated class member Marie Hiott. Dr. Tony Bledsoe, who teaches the Business Policy Class, was pleased not only with the monetary rewards obtained from the project but also the real life experiences students received. “Student involvement should lead to decision making. fundamentals of managing, and the process of leadership,” Dr. Bledsoe related. “The money plays a secondary role to the learning process,” he explained. The construction of the Shearon Harris Building, which will house the Math and Business & Economics Departments, is scheduled to be complete by next fall. “We’d love to be in it in August,” said Dr. Frazier, “they’re working toward that target date.” ioo On behalf of BUS-ECON 499, Dr. Bledsoe presents • check to Dr. Frazier for the Shearon Harris Building.
