FEBRUARY 22. 1982 THE tWiC PAGE 3 about by Felicia Stewart What’s Reds about? After a week of telling people what I thought it was abwt, I heard someone else give a completely different story. So I saw the movie again to see what I had missed. But I’m sticking with my story. 1 was telling what it was alMut; he was telling what it was supposed to be about. Reds is supposed to be a bio^aphy of Jack Reed, a writer of the early I900's who got wrapped up in ideas of social change, hung around with , the free-spirited Greenwich Village crowd, became a driving force in the Communist Party in America, went to Russia to write about the revolution there, got in a mess, died and was buried in the Kremlin. But the film, starring its writer and director Warren Beatty, misses the mark! It is not political, and it is not biographical though it has elements of both. It is an intense love story. So what is Reds about? It is about a woman, Louise Bryant, played by Diane Keaton, who is a writer struggling to be the liberated woman she wants to be. Her problem is finding that the only person stopping her is herself. The film begins showing the journalist Louise as the young wife of a dentist. Then Louise meets Jack; Louise interviews Jack; then Jack spends the night with Louise in her studio apartment. The next morning the first indications of Louise's inner struggles are seen. When Jack asks her to go with him to New York where the writers are, she shouts, “'What as?” Jack’s answer, “It’s almost Thanksgiving; you could come as a turkey," is perfect because though he wants her as'lover and as colleague, she would not accept such an answer because she does not know what she wants. This same feeling is expressed later when once in New York with Jack’s friends she complains that no one takes Notes from Career Services RECRUITERS: Monday, February 22, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company Insurance Sales. Her own lack of self-esteem or motivation is seen when at a party the bulldozer of an anarchist, Emma Goldman (played surprisingly strongly Maureen Stapleton) asks her what she writes. Louise replys with giggles, “Oh, everything, nothing!” The fact is, the things she does write about are such Insignificant things as an armory show that happened ten years earlier. But this is not her only problem. The worst one is that she is in love with Jack, the revolutionary who is always gone, always has -a taxi waiting. She cannot quite figure out what part he plays in her life or if he plays a part at all. She wants to be his mistress, and later his wife, but she does not want to stick by his side as he goes off to do the things revolutionaries do, like trek to Russia. Then the movie is also about how this confused young woman changes from a groupy to a strong individual. She wants to write, so she writes; she learns to accept criticism, and she learns to write about things that really matter. This change, strangely enough, comes about when she goes to Russia with Jack and finds herself caught in the excitement of the revolution. But in addition to finding herself there, she learns about selfless giving. She learns how to love Jack, how to accept herself, and how to accept him. Diane Keaton plays her part beautifully. She is as convincing as a whimp as she is lover, comrade, and determined traveller through the wilds and snows of Finland to find her husband. Warren Beatty, likewise, plays his role of the revolutionary well. He keeps his boyish charm throughput the film, but it is not out of character with the man who shouts from a speaker's stand his high ideals. He can be so sweet as to bring Louise flowers and give her a puppy, but he can also walk away from her when she begs him not to; the revolution is more important. Warren Beatty manages to hold this character together so that his actions and choices are natural. The film is a beautiful one to watch with its often breathtaking scenery, but it is even better just to listen to. The music plays an important part with the stirring “Internationale” sung by a crowd set against the lone singer and the sad little love song “I don’t want to play in your yard.” But the worcis of., the characters are the most important part. Practically every line is packed with meaning. The most delightful thing, though, is that this is a hit that has sut>stance—it has something to say. Meredith women should listen.
