SEPTEMBER 27. 198S THE TWIG PAQE 3 Hubbell Award to be Offered Meredith’s English Department will offer the Mubbell Award to students this year. Ruth Anne Hubbeli wishes to encourage Meredith students to do more and better creative writing. The English Department has thought it wise to recognize and encourage the student’s sustained effort. The department considers that effort significant when the student has practiced at least one form of writing over a span of time and with enough intensity to have acquired some skill and a measure of satisfaction. instead of recognizing a single piece of writing, which sometimes represents a certain flash of taient and sometimes is not accompanied by continued practice, the English Department hopes the Hubbell prize will accomplish more if they discover and h»ior the student who has some talent and the tenacity It takes to put that talent to continued use. To help the judges in evaluating the “sustained effort” and the "intensity of effort,” each contestant is asked to write a half page autobiographical essay tailing of the duration ar>d intensity of her interest in creati^ writing. Directions tor Submitting Manuscripts The Hubbell prize is awarded yearly at Awards Day. The compositions presented by the contestant must have been written after she entered Meredith. They may come from any year or years covered by the period of interest outlined' in the autobiographical essay. Previously published compositions may be included In the material the contestant offers. Each contestant must submit at least three compositions. She may not submit more than five. Compositions all may be of the same literary form, or all may be different.
