Tflffi One Voice Pigs 30 Chorale Sings With Manilow The music to "On® Vo/e»"was ter Noel Psillah; and Harriet back to the stage after his performstfice for an encore, and this tinfie he was not alone. The stage, in the round, was encompassed by the Meredith Chorale, as they sang ‘One Vo/oe" with Barry Manilow. Chorale director Fran McCachem was very pleased by the amplication' of the chorale. ' Both Dr. McCachem and Weil(ert. Silver Shield Inducts 13 New Members Ten senior members and three associate members were inducted Into Sliver Shield,the l>onorary leadership society on campus, In a ceremony held November 14 in Alumnae House. Senior members Inducted were Karen Banvlck, CInda Bodford, Anne Couiboume, Beth (.ewis, Lee Mabry, Jayne Osbome, ^th ^rker, Nancy Sparks, Lauren Start)oard, and Myrtle Turner. Associate (Junior) inductees were Kim Causey, by Molly McGee What could be better than one voice singing In ' the darkness? One , voice accompanied by 30 angels, that’s what! On November 16, Barry Manilow performed In Reynolds Coliseum and was acccmpanied by the Meredith Chorale during his encore number,"Of»e Voice". The plans for this event began in October when Maniiov/s ^ Angeles office called the college music department and invited the chorale to sing in the concert. After an agreement was made, the diorale received a rehearsal tape and the music to “I WritB th9 Songs" and "Of» Voioe". Of the 150 college choirs that have sung with Barry Manilow, the Meredith Chorale was the only group composed of all women. soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices. Since the chorale was minus tenor and bass voices, the music was rearranged a bit and proved to be very pieasi ng to Manilow and his musical director. On the day of the concert, the chorale rehearsed with the orchestra. Although Manilow was present for this session, he did not sing. For the performance, each chorale membo' vas given four compi Imentary tickets for family and friends.-The giris and their guests enloyed the concert from a section of the coHs^m reserved for ihem. After intermission, the chorale members went to a l3ackstage room where they dressed in red robes, and waited for their moment. According to singer Lynne Vaughn, the chorale was too excited to be ftervous. Bfthuslastic applause from the audience called Manilow Platts. Present. The inductees were also given a black robe to wear and a candle to canv and were then led to the Alumnae House. At the Alumnae House, new memt>ers were presented with Invitations to join and maroon ribbons to wear. Refreshments were served after the ceremony. “I was shocked,’’ new member Cinda Bodford said of the induction ceremony. “You never expect those kinds of things to happen.” She said that she was scared when she saw the girls Rescue Squad, if the Rescue Squad is called for, Security must also be called to direct them to the emergency. Saturday -8am to Monday - 8am there is a nurse on call, if an accklent occurs during this time the nurse on call should be contacted at her lK>me. (The name of the nurse on call is listed on the Nurses’ Schedule posted by each hall phone.) If there is no answer at her home, the student should call the nurse's emergency beeper number. Stanley, Karen Stone, Lynn, Vaughan, Nancy VMhlngton, Pottsie Brummltt, Haveni Godwin, Ruby Hudson, t^uren Starboard, Jeane Sumpter, and Autumn at her door dressed in black robes with candles. But she felt honored when she found out cdxHjt the society and its purposes. Noel Pelllsh, a non resident student, said the present Silver Shield members ^Miss By Linda Silers Joni Parker, a Meredith senior, was the winner of the Miss Garner Pageant, a preliminary to the Miss Norih Carolina Pageant, on November 13. Two other Meredith students placed as runners-up in the pageant. Jane Boyd, a junior, was first runner-up and Jeanine Faircloth, a senior, placed as second runner-up. In addition to her crawn, roses, and trophy, Joni received a $700 schoisrship, a $600 wardrobe, a silver bowl and a scholarship to the John Robert Powers School for winning the pageant. The three giris, along with other contestants, competed In four divisions of the pageant: Inter/lew, talent, swimsuit, and evening gown. For the talent division, Joni played the piano and sang ‘What I t^d For Love." from “A Chorus Line", Jane sans''Sftadow of Your Snrile," and Jeanine played BrahnVs "Scherzo In E Flat Minor" on the piano. For Joni, the week before the pageant was hectic. “It was incredible how many disasters I had,” she said. ' Dr Fran McCachem directed the group. Parker New Garner talent outfit did not fit andhad to t» re-made. She also got laryngitis that week and had a fiat tire on the day of the pageant. Joni decided to be in the pageant because the girls on her hall talked hier Into It. She was previously Fayeytteviii^s Junior Miss. She will be a contestant in the Miss North Carolina Pageant in June. Already she has participated in several functions, Including the Miss Kinston Pageant, the Gamer and Cary Christmas parades, and a womanless pageant that ^ judged. Joni plans a career in either International law or International trade. Jane, who is from Chartlotte, entered the pageant in order to get some experience. “The Chariotte.pageant is so t>ig that I wanted to start out in something small,” she said. It was a lot of work but a lot of fun in the end,” she added. Jeanine entered the pageant because she thought “it would be a fun, learning experience." •The Miss Gamer Pageart is an open pageant, which allows giris from across the state and not just the local area to enter. mSIDE ‘Christmas more than a day. p.2 •Students enjoy Chinese meal, p.6 -“Nutcracker" coming to Raielgh. p.7 "went to a lot of troubi^’ to get her back on campus for the induction.
