The theme of this year's REW was "unity.” The REW Student Planning Committee, chaired by Meredith senior Lauren ^artx»rd, planned programs that concentrated on unity in three different areas: unity with God through Jesus Christ, unity with our f^low man, and unity with ourselves. Lauren explained that a unity with others and ourselves is realized through a unity with God. This year’s REW offered events for everyone that were both fun and serious. The > Kicl«>ff, held in the Chapel Commons Sunday night, was led by Patty Jo Pulley, a Meredith senior, and her husband Rick. It featured special music In an informal atmosphere. On Monday morning Dr. Charles Page, from First Baptist Church In Charlotte, NC spoke at a worship service In Jones Chapel on man’s relation to God. Dr. Pagealso held an Informal ^is^selon In the President's Dining Room, answering questions about 'any and all topics. An informal vespers service led by David riorner from Providence Baptist Church in Raleigh was held 7 pm that night and rounded out the day’s REW activities.. Early Tuesday mourning a prayer breakfast was held in the President’s Dining Room, Later that night the movie, - Just Like Me was shown. This movie, made for teens and young adults, dealt with the three spiritual relationships emphasized during REW In a humorous but moralistic way. At WMnesda/s worship sen/ice in Jones Chapel, Dr. Albert Edwards from First Presbyterian Church In Raleigh spoke on the topic of man's relationship to other men. A candlelight communion service held 11 pm in the Chapel offered each participant a uniquely religious experience. The week ended with a concert Thursday by the group First Love and a worship sen/k» Friday In Jones Chapel led by Dr. Jeny Hayner fnjm Forest Hills Baptist Church. (Continued on Page 6) by Melody West If you have a compliant about poor lighting in the dome, do you know where to go to have something done about your complaint? Surprisingly, few students realize that there Is an organization on campus design^ especially to deal with concerns about campus life - this organization Is the Student Life Committee (SLC). The SLC, serving as a type of "complaint department," listens to campus concerns and compldnts, studies them, and takes action on them. SLC inv'estigates concerns of students, faculty, and staff, as well as reviewing current policies to keep operations running smoothly. The SLC is composed of 31 members, representing all aspects of campus life. Chaired by Joni Parker and advised by Dr. Sandra Thomas, SLC consists of students, faculty, and staff: Mrs. Anne Altleri Continuing Education Rep.), Carol Brooks (CCA Pres.), Grace Cameron (MIA Pres.), Lisa Clark (Freshman Class Pres.), Ruth Cochrane (Sophomore Class Pres.), Catherine Cole (member^at^large), Emily Craig and Linda Sellers ifwig co^editors), Martha Ensley (SGA Pres.), Ms. Jan Gllleen (R.A.), Terrle Holland (Junior Class Pres.), Ms. Anne Huffman (R.A.), Too Johnson (MCA Pres.), and Monica Keele (Black Student Rep.). Also Kristen Kerfoot (Leg. Board Chair), Lori Lewis (member^at-large), Beth Parker (Senior Class Pres.), Anna Pearson and Hanlet Platts Pafc Leev«8 co-editors), Becky Pyles (SLC Secretary), Mrs. Dorothy Sizemore (Dean of Students), Ms. Rhoda Sowers (Acting Director of Student Activities), Mrs. Frances Thome (R.A.), Myrtle Turner (MRA Pres.), Gayle Veach (Non-Resident Students Pres.), Ms. Patty Vipperman (R.A.), Mrs. Betty Cook (Home Ec. Dept.). Dr. Mary Johnson (Education Dept.), and Mrs. Olive Taylor (Math Dept.). SLC divides itself into subcommittees, each’ dealing with a particular aspect of campus life. For instance, there are subcommittees dealing with student affairs. Judicial affairs, buildings and grounds concerns, and academic concerns. Currently, one subcommittee is studying the possibility of building a bookstore on campus. V^en a concern Is voiced to the SLC, the proper subcommittee Is asked to study the problem thoroughly (by a certain date) and to report back to SLC, giving its recommendation. If SLC votes toacceptthis recommendation, It is sent to Dr. Thomas, who then sends it to the proper authority. For example, two yea^ ago, a student complained to SLC about Inadequate parking facilities on campus. An SLC subcommitfee .studied the situation, finally recommending that a large parking lot be built for student use. SLC voted to accept this recommendation, which was then sent to the proper authorities. This new parking lot, built beside the senior' dorms, is evidence that SLC is an effective organization. SLC encourages all students to bring their concerns to the committee - SLC needs student input, reflecting on the purpose of the Student Life Committee, Chairperson Joni Patker says, “Our work Is most meaningful when we serve you.” INSIDE - "Student Issues" questionnaire - “Under Millwood” preview • 19S3 Election schedule and information
