THE TWIQ March 28, laes 1 EDITORIALS / LETTERS litorial Journalism class welcome Meredith’s new schedule for next semester (Fall ‘83) has several new additions to it. Among these is the addition to the English department of a journalism class. A journalism class has been demanded and needed at Meredith for some time. Unfortunately, a few were opposed to it because they felt It did not belong in the English currioulurrV. Th^ks to the efforts of Dr. Betty Brewer, English department chairman, and others, the suggestion of a jourr^aiism course has finally’become a reality. - A course In journalism should add much to oor English department cun'lculum. For once, our writing courses will ftot tie restricted to creative writing, essays, themes, or research papere. A different view of writing can be received by English majors and other students. \ Hopefully, all students with an interest in journalism or writing will take advantage of ttie. new jourr»alism course. Finally, Meredith graduates can say that they, too, have training in journalism. MLS LETTER TO THE EDITORS Points to ponder Dear Editors: An opinion sun/ey by the Judicial Subcommittee of the Student Life Committee cur rently seeks campus opinion concerning open trials. As an advocate of open trials, I wel come the raising of the subject and hope that it will lead to public dialogue on the pros and cons of this issue. The "Open Trial Survey,” however, seems calculated to elicit a negative response. The questionnaire Is issued without any public dis cussion of the whys and wherefores of open trials vs. closed trials which might enable respondents to answer Intelligently. I^reover, the survey manages to imply that open trials might Inhibit, the. reporting of Infractions, the testimony of witnesses, .and, somehow, that of defendants as well. Presented in this way, I imagine that a negative response is a foregone conclu* SiW). The open-trial Issue desen/es a fairer consideration. Black’s Law Dictionary states that public trial Is necessary to d^nonstratethat the accused is fairly dealt with and that “the presence of interested spec tators may keep his triers keenly alive to a sense of their responsibility...”, in ' other wwds, it's as Important to the public as to the accused that trials t>e open. The principle is stated In another way in North Carolina's “Sunshine 1^,” wtiich mandates that "com missions, committees, bowds other governing bodies ... exist solely to conduct the public’s business” and thus "it is the public policy of this state that the hearings, deliberations and actions of said txxlies be conducted openly.” Open trials would lift the .curtain of mystery and suspicion that presently surrounds judicial hearings, spread a knowledge of. the functions and Instrumentalities of judicial bodies more widely among students, and; probably, serve as a mors effective, deter rent to infractions. As a two> year veteran of the Judicial Board, I can testify that closed sessions tend to relieve judges from the responsibility to answer to the public for their actions and thus promote judicial irresponsibility. Sincerely, Tom Parramore, History Dept. “Self Defense In P.£." Recently several girls in the vicinity of the North Carolina State University Campus have either t>een reped or have almost tieen rap^. One reason pursuers have been successful when attempting to rape girls is because the ^irts do not know any self defuse techniques. Ihe only course Meredith offers that is close to a self defense course is c^ditioning. This dass builds up your running s(minaand therefore helps you distance the pursuer. ~ 'I feiel Meredith should offer a self defense course as a P.E. credit. That would Include judo and’ kEvate techniques. This class v«uid not only build your muscles but would also help t>enefit you should' you be attacked. “And Ttien There Was Light?" if you pai1( your car behind the library and plan on going to it after dark, take a flashlight so you can find it because there isn't efficient lighting. If more lighting was available, this area would not cause such fears to be aroused. I suggest that Meredith put additional street lights behind the library unless a self defense course Is offered to help the students fight off anyone lufl^ing in the shadows behind the cars. "Overloading: A ^tocMng Experience" The majority of us at Meredith are guilty of overloading our electrical, outlets. Some of us have found this to be a “slvxking" ex perience. Yet, how are we suppose to know how much an .outlet will hold? Can it handle a hainJryw, curlers, make-up mirror and a television? I feel that the m«dntenance personnel should provide a guide for each student to inform us about how many watts the outlets will hold. I also feel that freshman room should be checked days after orientation to make sure that the outlets are not overloaded so much that an 6Kplosion could occur as It did at William and Mary earlier this school year. it would be worth the ad ditional time taken to check the rooms to insure the safety for all. if every freshman class was introduced to these rules and regulations they could continue to exhibit them throughout their years at Meredith. collegiate crossword I Bales f«r SahaiHtlBg Ttoiff Artleles H your dub or organization Is interested in submitting an artlda \o1he TWO, please f^low thedirsctlorts below: 1) Either type doutile-apaoe OR print on lirted notebook paper, skipping ^fery other line.
