Page 2 The TWI& October 3. 19&3 g EDITORIALS / LETTERS Editorial New law has tight provisions This past spring the North Carolina General Assembly enacted the Safe Roads Act, which came into effect on October 1. Because of the new law, a drunken driver (especially if underage) will face much stiffer penalties than what existed In the past. Since many Meredith students are still under the new drinking age of 19, they should be aware that using a fake 1.0. (or allowing another student to use your I.D.) can result in a fine of $500 and six monttis In prison. Also, an underage person who commits a traffic accident as a result of alcohol can lose her license for a long period of time. Another Important .part of the new l«w is that even If an underage person is seen intoxicated by officers, they can face stiff legal penalties. Al{;students should be aware of the increased use of road blocks th# will stop all drivers and c^eck for alcohol consump tion. A person who refuses a breathalyzer test will have her license automatically revoked for 10 days. Now that the lawmakers and officers have gotten serious about the law, it is time for students to get serious. Make sure at least one In your group stays sober during a night on the town. Call a roommate or suitemate if you’re too damk to drive home. If that does not wc»1(, call a taxi. Most importantly, ieam to drink responsibly. It could save a life.
