More regulations needed
for room searches
The room searches that occurred recently have caused many
questions to form in students’ minds, it has Iseen several yevs
since a room seareh of six^ proportions has been conducted and
it came as a surprise to many students.
One point in this touchy issue is: what are the exact ruies for
sealing a room? Many students have no idee how a search Is
conducted, in addition, students aiso are unaware of their rights
when someone comesto search their room. Do you have the right
not to allow your room searched? Can your roommate’s articles
be searched if she is not present? Can you get In troulirie for
having a toaster in yoiir room if the search is specifically for al>
c^ol?
Another crucial point Is: Is It necessary for students to be
searched by fellow students? For many, this could ruin valuable
friendships. Even more important is the humilltflon of having
your items inspected by a peer. This could promote more hostile
feelings than cooperative efforts during the search. Perhaps It
could be better if a resident advisor or staff member conducted
the search, instead of the students who Initiated it.
Pertiaps, tl^ recent room searches were necessary. That Is
not at Issue here, it is the matter of how the room searches were
conducted. Many students would be grateful if guidelines for
room searches could be set up and publicize, if nx>m searches
are going to become more common, which should not be neces
sary, the students should be given more Information on the sub
