MARCH 26. 1984 THE TWIG PAGE 3 Intramural Update If you tNxight the football Intramurals’ championship game was reciting, then you should have been down at “Weatherspoon Memorial Gym” for the 1964 baskett>all intra- murals' champlon^ip game on Tuesday night, Feb: 28 at 8:00. Bsketball Intramurals began January 30 with 23 teams signed up in the single elimina tion tournament. Participation and enthusiasm were awesome! Everyone seemed to ^joy get*, ting involved and seoned to have lots of fun, even those who suffered “hard-fought" minor injuries such as tumps and bnjises, sore achy muscles, over-stressed heart and lungs, twisted ankles, jammed flngera, “fractured noses,” and last but not least, “blushing egos" from shooting the ball in the op posing team’s basket. What a “hoot” I After each team’s long, battle, 2nd String and 3rd Barefoot remained undefeated. 2r>d String’s team, Joan Wyatt, PatHcia Brannock, Susannah Fleming, Mary Dee Caraway, Stephanie Gay, Bart>ara Settle, Michelle Cox, Mary Touslgnant, Kathy Dinger, and Lisa Drake, their dedicated hall advisor and cheerieeder, first defeated 3rd Fair 19-10. Next they won over 4th String by forfeit but continued strong with a vtrln over 2nd Poteat 20-6. Their fourth victory was over 2nd Vann, 21-9, In the semi-finals insuring their spot in the i^mpionship game. 3nj Barefoot’s team, other wise known as the Petie team, Grace Akers, Lucy Linton, Carole Walker, Laura V\^lch, Kathy Doyle, Sheri Wayne, Ann Fonjham, Tedi Altman, Julia V^itley, and Leila Davenport, team manager, began their sea son with a v»fln over 3nJ Vann, 18-14. Next they defeated 3rd Brewer 22-13; followed by another urln ewer Heilman 20-16. V^th these wins, they advanced to the semi-finals aiid continued to be victorious with Chilean students speak The:March meeting of the Spanish TertuliaClub had as its featured guests the two visiting Chilean students at Meredith this spring, Luz Maria Garrido and Soledad Mejia. They spoke on “Chile Today.” including the topics of education, social ethnography and customs in Chile today. They also discussed the current poiitteal conditions and the hope for Improved democratic government in Chilean society. The students also de lighted the Tertulia by re counting th^r own trav^s and Impressions of the U.S.A., both on the East and West coasts. The Club will have rts April 12 social evening at Papagayos in North Raleigh. Tertulia officers for next year were elected as follows: President - Elizabeth Revell; Vice President - Angelea Herbert; Secret«»y-Treasurer - Kimberly Lovelace; Pn^gram Committee - Nan Henry arxJ Allison Hunt. Both tl^ese deserving victors came to the ciiampionshlp game with tremendous spirit and determination; the 2nd Stringers dressed In “fired-up” red and 3rd Barefoot P^les dressed in their notorious sky blue “Making Waves" shirts, their heart boxers, and their “Petie” black eyesl Enthusiasm f illed the .air - the stands were filled with Cheung fans and the teams anticipated an Intense game with lots of action. Also, making their 2nd very ^»cial intramural performance was Meredith's Angelic Mar ching Kazoo Band led by Dina Durham and Zan Bunn. They opened the game with the “Star- Spangled Banner” and per formed a splendid half-time show which helped ease game jitters and tensioni The game was neck to neck the whole way through with 2nd String leading 6-5 at the half; a lead which 2nd String main tained to keep leading to their straight fifth victory and the championship! The final score vras 12-11. A special feature of the game was the Steve's Ice Cream Players of the Game Awards in which the prizes, $5 gift certifi cates and Steve's painter's hats, were generously donated by Steve's Ice Cream Parlor located on Hillsborough Street. The official judges, who selected the outstanding player for each team, were Dr. Allen Happy Birthday Beth Madren!
