SEPTEMBER 4, 1984 THE TWIG PAGE 7 FEATURES Sacrifice for success: An internship by Betsy Short This summer was anything but typical! No, I did not get the bronze tan I am accustomed to getting each sum mer, nor did I compete in any tennis tournaments. Instead I sat behind a desk eight fiours a day, five days a weel and gained 10 pounds. But. it was worth it. What couid be worth iosing a tan and gaining 10 pounds, you are probably wondering? For two months I worked as a state government intern at the Division of Aging (OQA) writing an informational pamphlet which describes the programs and services they sponsor. Sound tike fun? Probably not to most people, but for one interested in writing it was a tremendous experience. Be sides a little weight, I gained know ledge, experience, connections, and a new family. The DOA adopted me as one of their own. Because I had to inten/iew most of the staff to leam about the pro grams they specialized in, I was able to get to know everyone. In the process, I iearned a lot about state government - nnuch more thstfi i learned from any poii- sci text or lecture. I was actuaily a part of the system and getting a bird's eye- view of a govemment agency in action. Sure,' I sat through some iong boring meetings and read manual after manual of policies and procedures. But, in the end, I made a difference. I wrote a pam- phiet to be di^ributed throughout the state which wili encourage North Caro lina's older adults to get invoived and take advantage of their years of ieisure. This summer I was an advocate for the aging. Now I am an advocate for the Office of Youth Advocacy and Involve ment which sponsored my internship. If you are interested In woi1ing with fine, educated people in an area you enjoy, I encourage you to apply for a state govemment internship. In the process • you will ieam howto prepare a portfolio, a resume', and get good inter/iewing experience before you are hit with the big-time - the REAL WORLD. As -an intem you wiil be treated as a profes sional, and a person. Whiie you learn more about state government, you wiil get practical experience in a fieid that intersts you. Most of ali, you viiilt leam more about yourself and wtiat is impor tant to you as far as an ideal working relationship and envin^nment is con cerned. You are never too young or too old to explore new areas or job options. This summer the interns ranged from rising juniors to graduates from schools across the state and entire east coast including Harvard, ECU, NCSU, UNC, Meredith, UVA, and many other colleges and universities. Although I was the oniy intem at the DOA, some govem ment offices had several int^s. My only contact with the other interns was through the seminars and socials arranged by the Youth Advocacy and In volvement Office. Together we attended a seminar that included a tour of Polk ' Youth Detention Center, Central Prison, and the SBI (State Bureau of Investiga tion) lab. We were also given a picnic at the Governor's nianslon. Because the interns are doing important work for the state, they are greatly at^reciated. My experience with the DOA was ciose to perfect. I wanted to detennine whether I would enjoy writing as a career and leam what type of jc^ are available to English majors in the govemment. Whatever your major, there is an intern ship for you. Contact the Office of Career Services in Cate Center for more information.
