Changes for the best
EDITORIALS
There are many ‘deliohtfur things to
be recognized at Meredith College. The
student-teacher ratio, the beautiful
campus and the special dinners and
picnics are three aspects of Meredith that
set It apart from other schools.
But, every halo is tarnished.
While there are rnany peachy things at
Meredith, there are also many minor and
major problems that should be brought to
surface. The “major problems" will t>e
brought out in depth later.
After talidng with many students, I
have noted several minor problems around
campus. You lnow the kind that make you
shiver Just t>ecause they lri( you so much.
Maybe we should call them ‘pestering pro
blems’. All i know is that If I could, I would
change these problems and more.
There are three things about the food
in Balk dining hall that I would change.
Rrst, I would tell the staff to layoff the
whip cream. Have you noticed that almost
every dessert has whip crevn on it? What
if you don’t like it?ldo, but there are some
who don’t.
(would also change two names of the
food. I would change chili con came to
kidney beans con pequeno came and tuna
(or chld«n) salad to celery salad with a
hint of tuna (or chicken).
7?)e vacuum clears also irk me. I
will recognize the fact that new ones were
purchased last year; however, this was not
campus wide, if I had the power, 1 would
donate the gi^ vacuums to the needy and
would buy new ones for the students and
housetoepers.
The washers and dryers irk me. Why is'
Jt that some washera cost $.35 to use wtiiie
others cost S.50? Why Is it that some
dryers cost $.25 and otiiers cost $.50? The
Meredith Handbook states that “T^ere^s a-
S.35 charge for each wuher and a;$'.25
charge for.each dr^r." •
If the students must fpllow what is
written in the Handbook, I say the admini
strators follow It to. They are a part of the
"Meredith community." Choke,, it up,
guys. We deserve a refund. Now.
Also, vt^ile we’re on the subject of
washers and dryers...Why, out of all the
dryers in the world, does a women's
college have the kind of dryers that mean
death to bras? The “holes” in the dryere
catch the bra hooks and tveak them. I’ve
had two break.
The washers and dryers are typical of
what is seen often at Meredith College. As
long as the college is getting the students’
mcKWy, wf>o caree If we students are
satisfied.
The laundry service also irks me. I say
do away with it. Why not open a Centred
Campus Laundry ^n.rice? The school
could add nriore washers and dryers to that
room, toss in a couch, a t.v., and a few
desks and ch^rs and let the students do
their own clothes. I would go so far as to
say “and let this service be free to the stu
dents" -but, I guess that is asking too
much. We can only expect so much for
K,200 a year.
Have you evertried to wat^ television
in a parlor on the Meredith campus? The
reception isn’t too good. Is It? I think the
school should buy every parlor a new tele
vision. Ce^le would be nice, too. Why is It
that the “Johnson Hallers” can have nice
t.v.’sinfhelrhomesand the students, who
help pay for their salaries, don’t. I think it
has been forgotten that M^edith College
is suppose to t>e “home” for 2000 stu
dents.
And what Is attacking the side of
Walnwright Music Building? When I first
saw it I thought It vas put up for some-
bod/s Birthday. I think it should be
destroyed - quick! It is as tacky as the
abstraction at Wake Forest University.
I u^e all students to write and ex
press heir views on these topics. I also ask
that students write on any other subjects
they feel strongly i^ut. I will be writing
articles on the new alc(^d regulations,
idcohol on campus, men in thedomis, the
post office, this Honor System and the
class attendance policy. If you have any
comments on these Issues, please speak
up.

Letters to the editor
Deer Editor,
As a student of Meredith College, a
constituent of Senator Jesse Helms, and a
member of the College Republicans, I am
personally offended by the naive, balsed
remarks of the October 1 editorial "con-
eming Bonnie.Franklin".
Theedlior's remarks implied mplicitly
that the Heinrts’ suppofteradid not act In a
manner while BoonIe Franklin
/ veoi ffleosdHh C6Uiieu»--;A&^Rt^
Ste^' cW2m, It mere
institutional light to express my views
and ask Ms. Franklin ^questions I do not
feel that I was rude to her as the editorial
Implied. I can only speak for myself.
VWten I say that Ms. Franklin and the
Hunt representative, who recommended
Meredith College for this wonderful,
hoiiywood show of persuasive, Hunt pro
paganda, did not respect the inteliegence
of Meredith students. Rather than respect
us; the pmoc^ic headquarters tried to
deceive students by titling Ms. Franklin’s
lecture “Voter registration and women's
issues” when in fact her speech was
nothing more than a pro Hunt rally.
Whether or not the students of Mere
dith College were aware of the biased
Intentions of Ms. Bonnie Franklin and the
democratic headquarters is relevant when
considering that some students were mis
guided and persuaded by Ms. Franklin's
imparatlallty towanj Sen. Jesse Helms,
wtiom she said she had never met.
After Ms. Franklin's speech, I saw a
Meredith student rush to Ms. Franklin for
an autograph while receiving this auto
graph, the student replied, “I w^ going to
vote for Helms, but you have changed my
mind.”
I ask you, how can anyone justify Ms.
Franklin's visit to Meredith College as just
a spee^ on Voter Registration and
women's rights when at least one of the
students here was misguided. Perhaps, If
this student had been given the right to
equally hear both sides of each campaign,
she might have been able to be more
decisive.
'' In the Meredith dbmrrfunity a mutual
trust is ufMi'ekl' between the 'students,
faculty, and administration. I trust that the
administraters of Meredith College will not
be star-struck and allow this to happen
again.

■To the editor:
I am offended and somewhat puzzled
by several statements in the recent issue
of The Twig.
Bonnie Franklin was not verbally
“attacked" by Helms supporters. She was
asked questions regarding her stands and
opinions and was not “attacked" or in-
ulted In any way. When someone gives a
polittoai speech as loaded as Ms. Frank
lin's was, they have to expect some ques
tions and feedback.
As one of the Helms supporters, I take
offense to being labeled "exhibiting little
class” and being an “uninformed radical.”
I believe the Heims supporters showed
nothing but class, which is amazing corv
slderlng the circumstances. Why hasn't
anyone bothered to conrvnent on the abuse
^K>wered upon us that morning and since
then? As to being uninformed, I have to
disagree, l believe I am very informed
regarding the campaign and the Issues, as
are the other l-lelms supporters that I know
on our campus. It appears that Ms.
Franklin and The Twig are the unin-
ormed, and 1 note the fifth paragraph of the
article on the first page. “Franklin ex-
lalned that this election affects the entire
country because should Helms win the
senate election, .he will head the Foreign
Relatloris -Comn^ttee again.” Senator
Helms is not head of the Senate Foreign
Relations Committee, so how can he be
head again? He is c^air of the Subcommit
tee on Western Hemispheres Affairs, and
has said that If the position of chair of the
Foreign Relations Committee becomes
available to him, he wHIl not accept so that
he could retain his chair of the Agriculture
Committee.
I also have to say that the subject of
Ms. Franklin’s speech was mispuljlteized,
no matter what excuses are given now:
Sincerely,
fMiln Rogers
To the editor,
We h»i« all been taught in Psy
chology 100 how important positive rein
forcement is in our growing process. It is
especially Important in our learning pro
cess - good grades are a reward for hard
wortt and a goal we often strive to achieve.
It is important In each class we take to
know how well or how poorly we are doing.
Each test grade or paper grade often
