PAQE2 THE TWIG NOVEMBER 12, 1984 Cornhuskin’; Is it too much? Cornhuskin’ brings much erv thuslasm to the Meredith campus, every year. "Oass support" is o(hlblteid, Big- Ul' Sis reiatlorts are renewed, tests are postponed (well, until the next week), costumes are made, and good, food is eaten. Ail these things and more make Comhuskin' a unique week. Comhuskln' is a goc^ way to show schooi spirit. K dnjms up ti% support this schooi needs, it gets a iot of us excited about Meredith and breaks the every day, week, month routine many of us have. 1 think It's great to get psyched alMut Comhuskin’; however, i think it's a shame that so much emphasis Is put on the week. There are other events to get excited about. Sports, for instance. Meredith has several teams. I think it's only fair that get some support. We- all support some ACC team,-don’t we wtiy not support Meredith’s? Water fights, toilet paper “roils”, chants, sbngs - they got old, for me, my freshman ywr. I am glad that everyone doesn't share my attitude towards Comhuskin' because we probably wouldn’t have It anymore. I guess I've grown out of It. Or, possibly, i never grew Into It. Our teams work hard to do their best and win. To play a good game is Im portant to them. They practice hard and put a iot of time into the making of their team, i Just think It's sad that m don't support our teams. I know .that if students have time to has« water fights and pick up countless shreds of toilet paper, they haw time to go to a game, i think we.should become.better athletic supporters. There are aiso other ways to show your, schooi support. There are many ciut9'that':^ltf ilke'lhterested.mem bers-You could also become a staff member of one of the three student ' publications. Again, none of these : choices tal^ that much tirne.out of your schedules. No more time ttwi a of Comhu^ln'. I'm glsKl that Meredith has Com huskin’. i think this school needs it. I do think, however, we should ask ourselves ^y we Hke It so much. AS a sophomore, I asked mys^f that question and realized themain reek>n i iil^ it was because it gave me a chance to iet ioose and take out my-frustrations during waterfights. Comhuskin' ^so reminded me too much of.my high schooi days. You know • spirit week and homecoming. That's a part of .my past I'd like'to put to rest. I've grown out of high s^oollsh things. . .I've chosen not to be involved In Comhuskin' the past two years. It's a decision I have not regretted a bit. I am gi^ that people "get into It." It’s good for some people. I do urge all students to think about supporting our teams more. We owe our support to' them. . GetJnvolved.Qoseeourteamspiay. Gist involved. Join a club. Get Involved. Letter to the Editor Dear Editor: Weil, I've Just about seen it alll On the Ttiursday night of Comhuskin' (9:45 p.m.) > entered the Infirmary, doubled over with palnfui stomach cramps. I was anxious to get some medicine or helpful advice from the nurse v^ should have been on duty, (note: tl^ student hand- ook states that a nurse is on duty 24 hours a day Monday - Friday.) As i ap- roached the empty counter, I looked down to find a note wtilch read, "Gone to Comhuskin’!" I couldn’t believe It! Though mine wasn’t an emergency, what would happen If one really came up? i see no purpose In having a nurse if she is't going to be in the infirmary for the students. Just what would become of our society if everyone was at liberty to take l^reaks from his job as he pleased? I can see it now - a seriously Injured patient stumbles up to a hospital only to find the doors locked ^d a sign stating, "IHospitai closed for the afternoon > staff is at Christmas Parade.” Elizabeth Smeloer SGA Office Hours Pres.
