THE TWIG FEBRUARY 4, 1986 EDITORIALS Once upon a time, I was a freshman When { wrived at Meredith two years ago I was given a title that was dif ficult to>»ndle at times. I was Cynthia L. Church, first class fnshman. I didn’t know much about Meredith when I arrived. I guess I gave up reading the “fan mall” after I received duplicate copies of the same letter on several oc casions. To them, I was just a computer label to be placed on a st^ of envelopes bearing the same return address.' I received a Handbook but it wasn't written by one of my fawxlte authors, so I put it on a shelf labeled "Rainy Day Reeding.” What can I say, It never rained. Had I waded through the Handbooki would have gained Indepth knowledge concerning the life exhibited In the elite Meredith community. But I didn’t and I had to be put on a respirator following our first h^1 meeting. TTiere are many aspects of Meredith I strongly disagree with and one of them Is freshman curfew. | hated it when I was a freshman and I still hate it now. I have made many adult decisions in my life, and one of them was to go to college. Yet, when I came to Meredith \ was treated more like a child than wt^en I spent nxire time at home. I had self-determlning hours at home and always came in shortly before or after 12 becuse I didn’t want to keep my tTx>m up late waiting. But I also didn't go btfs, frats or midnight movies. Now I do. The way the system Is set up now, It gives students three alternatives. One: always, always, always be on time. Two: come in late and risk getting grounded. Ttiree: stay out all night and not get campused. I don't know of any parent that grounds their child for being 16 minutes late. My mother wouldn't even do that, and If she woul'dn’t... tMiy should this school? Meredith Is jeopardizing the safety of the students t>y enforcing such strict rules. Freshmen are going to go out and party, go midnight bowling, go to mid night movies, frat parties, friends £uid bars and It Is not the school's responsi bility that thiese freshm«i come in on time. And It is not the school’s responsi bility to accept the parental duties of the freshman class. If the school is going to do this, then I sure wish they would help pay my tuition bills, also. I attended the SGA forum on Friday and agreed with the majority of the stu dents. I listened to their testimonies on coming In latefor noble reasons and then being greeted at the gates with a ball and chain. I heanj the same frustration In their voices that I recalled In mine my frestv man year. >'m just glad they were able to voice their opinkms knowng that they rray make a difference. If nothing Is done to prevent fresh men from having a curfew, I won't be sur prised. If self determining houre are be stowed upon this freshrren class, I think that the school is heading In the right di rection. I was always told that going away to college helps you grow-up.lt helps you become more responsible artd tests you in different areas. I think it's time that Meredith puts away tfie cradles and lets the students l^m to crawl so that when we graduate we'll be walking with our heads held high. The thought of not knowing what I’m going to door where I’m going to be is terrifying! I’ve always known every May that I’d be back in the Meredith dorms the next Au gust. But where will I be n&(t August - or this June for that matter! The only solu tion I could think of was to GET A JOB!! But how to actually go about it has been sorriething that is a confusing dilemma in my mind. But help was near! The Career Sen/ices Office has been adefinite llvesaver. They have practically taken me by the hand and led me through the steps towards jobhood! Resumes, references, inten/lews ~ I would have had no idea of what to do without their help. The ladies in the Career Services Office have gone out of their way to help us Seniors find a job. Not just any job, but a job that fits out qualifications and desires. 1 would probably never have had a shot at Procter & Gamble if Career Ser- vk«s hadn’t offered interviews with them here at Meredith. Interviews for me start soon »id believe It or not I feel prepared. Career Services can’t hand me the perfect job on a gold platter, but they’>« definitely shown me the first step to wards a career of my own! - Walt Disney World offers fun summer jobs by Rer» Folds Staff Report “Excit^nent, fun, good experience” .... they are all words that students In volved in the Walt Disney World College Program haw used to describe their summer of work at the Magic Kingdom. Editor's Note: I am writing this In response to last week's ‘letter to Ote editor' concerning two ads run In The Twig. CCA submitted the ad for the Christ mas Dance, aid If they felt this ad was the best possible way to advertise, then It was the Twig's responsibility to run Ote ad as Is. At least they ca^ enough abouf their function to want others to know sbouf It. As fer as the ad for Barbels goes, first of all the ad was not for “free beer." The coupon was fa- one cent beer. The Twig has been experiencing fin ancial difficulties and has been pressured to run more ads. The sum of money we received from this ad justified running the ad. I vrill say that I am sorry if these ads offended anyone. I still feel The Twig was justified In running them. The Twig IS the student's newspaper and It will continue to cater to the student's needs. Thanks for your letterSi and for ex pressing your opinions on this and other Issues.
