MARCH 18, 1986 THE TWIG PAOeS SPORTS Meredith warms up with opening scrimmage by Usa BrIH Meredith College opened its softt»ll season with a scrimmage at Louisburg College on Wednesday, February 2T. The Angels fared will -in the doubleheader but Louisburg walked away with both vic tories. The losses will not count against Meredith's seasonal record. Louisburg jumped ahead quickly in the first game and held Meredith score less to win, 5-0. The Angels got their bats crackin’ in the second game, though, arid held a 3-njn lead. But Louis burg returned the favor and rallied to win Veteran Sandy Dupree began her 3rd season and pitched for the Angels in the first ganoe. Other juniors included center- fielder Teresa McMaster, who hit 3 of 6 and tatted (n 2 runs, (tenee Godwin, wtio Meredith Netters open season by Use Brin The Meredith College tennis team begins its regular season play with a match against Christopher Newport (Virginia). The match was played at home at 2:30. Coach Joy Massye has 8 players re- tumlng from the fall season. Junior The- r^ Duffy and sophomore. Bartara Bulla played the number 1 and 2 positions, re spectively. Rounding out last sea^n's line-up are juniors Pam Fisher, Laura Cochrane, and Melinda Wrenn. Sophomore Dorcus Hostetler returns for the sprlrtg, as well as freshman Elizabeth Homthal, wfK> played the third position, and Sara McMilltan. Sophomore Kinney Neal play ed last year but was unableto play In the fall due to illness. Newcomers to the ten nis team are sophomore Meshelle Cox and freshmen Karen Lamonds and Jessi ca Perry. The Angels’ next tennis’match will be at St. Mary’s tomonow at 2:30. Tbey travel to Queens College on Thurs day. First fair wins basketball title by Aihen Jenkins The Intramural B^ketbali Champ ionship was an exdting one between 3rd Barefoot Ballskins arvl 1st Faircloth. Rrst Fairclotb edged out the Ballskins 29-15. Steve's tee Cream's Most Valuable Players were selected from each team, with Carole Jeanne Ricks from 3rd Bare foot and PhyllisKarresfn^mlst Faircloth taking the honors! Coach Marie Cham- blee and Theresa Duffy did a great job of offteiating. Thanks to all teams, partici pants, and referees for making Basket ball Intramurals a success! Sophomore Teni Marks excelled at the plate by hitting 3 of’5 and scoring 2 runs. Sophomore shortfielder Buzze Mann ' ptayed well defensively as well as hitting a double to add another run. Those play«^ retuming for a second season are outfielders Margaret Gill and Becky Smith, catcher Beth Kennedy, first Dean's List t>asemen Aileen Jenkins and Carlissa Oakley, and third baseman Joan Wyatt. Freshman team memtiere are Kelly Bag- by, Debra Kiildand, Kathleen O'Brien, Carla Quinn, and Lou Anne Stephenson. Dr. Cindy Bross coaches the Mere dith College softball team, and is assist ed by Dr. Jack Huber, Clare Lyn BtdcK, and J^f Moore. Susan Beck manages the team while Fw>nie Rowland Is the score- keeper.
