PAGE 4 THE TWIG APRIL 22. t985 MEREDITH SOFTBALL Meredith softball wraps up season The Meredith Colleoe Softball team finished the 1965 season by compiling a record of eight wins and ten losses. The Angels wrapped up the season with a big win over Duke University and with losses to Atlantic Christian College snd Mt. Olive College. On April 2, Meredith hosted ACC in theirsecond meeting of the season. ACC won both games by scores of 9^ ar>d 9l. There was more hitting In the first game t)y both teams as Meredith tallied eight hits and ACC had eleven. Bubtl^bats were quieter in the second game. Coach Bfoss named freshman outfielder Kelly Bagby Offensive Piayer of ttte Day and sc^)homwe leftfielder Margaret Gill was named Defensive Player of the Day. Duke returned to Meredith on April 3 to be dea^t their second loss at the harKjs of the Angels. Meredith won both con tests 4-1 and 7-4.The Angels corr^ited seven hits in the first g«ne, two of which came from the bat of Kelly Bagby. Mere dith Increased their hits to ten in the by Use Britt second game. Sophomore Joan Wyatt led with three hits and claswnate “Buzz” Mann was close behind with two. Joan was named Offensive Player of the Day while freshman catcher Debra Kirkland took the title of Defensive Player of the Day. The bats were hot in Mt. Olh« when Meredith traveled there April 9. Both teams hit well but Mt. Oive pulled ahead on the doubleheader by winning 19-6 in the first game and 9-2 In the second. “We played well offensively,” said Coach Cindy Bross, “but the four days off for Easter hurt us defensively." Sophomore Beth Kennedy had an outstanding day at the plate by racking fwo hits in each game. Freshman shortst^ Lou Ann Ste phenson belted in a hofljefwn. The two shared the honore as Offensive Players of the Day. Freshman secorxl baseman Cwla Quinn, who committed no enors in the doubleheader, was named Defensive Ptayer of the Day. Meredith 9, Greensboro 0 The Meredith College tennis team was on the road to Greensboro April 11 for its second match of the season against Greensboro College. Once again, the Angels dominated to carry the match in straight sets. The win gives Meredith a record of &>2. Ttteresa Duffy and Barbara Bulla had idemicai scores of 6-1, 6-1 in each of their singles matches over Kim Melton and Debbie Shutt, respectively.Pam Fis her defeated Laurie Portzeline 6-2, 6^ TENNIS while Kinney Neal beat Tamara Swanson 6-2, 6-1. liiura: Cochrane handed Lee Hadlock a loss by the score of 6-3, 6-2 and Melinda Wrenn fought off Sondia Christy 6-2, 7-5. In action on the doubles court, the team of Bart>ara and Theresa won against Melton and Shutt 6-1. 6-2. Pam and Kin ney coasted to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Port zeline and Swanson. Queens placed third with 100 points and Salem finished in fourth place with 36 pcrints. Campbell 9, Meredith 0 Campbell University hosted Mere- ’ dith Col lege in its last away match of the season on April 15. The Angels played well but Campbell swept the match. Meredith’s record falls to 6-3. Theresa Duffy played a good match against Carol Stanley but was tunned away 6*4, 6-4. Bart^ Bulla fell to Nadine Carson 6-1,6-2 while Pam Fisher lost to Missy Register 6-4, &0. Kinney Neal was-Elizabeth i-iomth^ came up short against Kathy Riley 6-4, 6-1 and Laura Cochrane was defeated by Pam Lydick &0, &0.
