Hope to see you there. CCL Media Services NEW MEDIA SPEOALIST AT MEREDITH John Kincheloe has just anived l^ere from the University of Virginia to take the newly created position of Media Specialist. He brings with him not only nriedia ex perience, but a broad liberal arts background as well, his undergraduate degree is from the University of Richmond where former President, E. Bruce Heilman, is now presi dent. John has done graduate wstit at Duke University and holds a Masters Degree from the University of Virginia His work as an artist was recently featured in a nationally broadcast documentary entitled, “Living Double Lives.” John's office is in the lib rary, on the ground level (x8531). He’s a valu^le, creative resource to you. Get to know him soon. V-STARS CEILINQ-MOUNTED There are now two V-Star Television Projectors at Meredith — one in Cate Auditorium and another in the Library's Projection Room. These projectors are now perrnannentiy ceiling-mounted. Those who have not seen what aV-Starcan do should give John Kin cheloe a call at x8531. And those who have been disappointed in the past with the port able unit will be amazed at the improvement a few adjustments have made - take a second look at the V-Stars. Video television projection and computer interfacing are ex citing resources for classes, symposia and meetings. Ask us about workshops and demcHistrations. It’s your equipment. VIDEO STATIONS IN LIBRARY Two video viewing stations are now set up on the Main Floor of the library. This could be a valuable extension of your classroom. Assigned viewing can be as imporlant as assigned reading. Consider some possibilities: — Place a videotaped lecture on resen/e for viewing-reviewing. — Assign a film as a part of your class — Visually convey the techniques of your discipline-inten/iewing. teaching, run ning, etc. — Record student pr^entations to place on reserve The viewing stations are designed to be used with headphones which are checked out at the Circulation Desk. Videocassettes can l3e placed on reserve In a matter of min utes. As n^y as four headphones can be plugged I nto each video station. Take a look at this setupsoon and tell John Kincheloe what you want to do. If it’s possible, he’ll do it. If it’s impossible, he'll try anyway. HOW TO RESERVE AND CHECK OUT EQUIPMENT Sign up for A-V Rooms and equipment early! Resen/ations are taken between 8:00 am. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday in the library. There is so much demand for A-V equipment, if you wait until the last minute, you may not get what you need. Use our reservation form to resen/e any of the 16mm-, overhead-, or filmstrip projectors, three-fourths inch or one-half inch video equipment or tape recorders we loan. (A com plete list of A-V hardware is available.) The equipment is normally held for you at the library circulation desk where it should also be returned. BETA? Statistics show that Beta video format is continuing to lose the war with VHS for control of the video market. Beta, however, is in many ways a desirable, even superior, format. But 70 — 80 percent of the video Industry is now involved with the popular VHS format, and thisfigure is rising. Media Sen/ices will be working mainly with VHS format becauseof the wide range of relatively inexpensive software available. And unlike Beta, the future of VHS is expanding rapidly. A number of faculty will want to use Beta format nDateriai, though, so Media Services is in the process of acquiring a Beta player. It should available soon. We will then have VMS, three-fourths inch and Beta capabili ties. International standard equipment (for PAL and SECAM) is a further possibility If there is sufficient demand for non-U.S. programming. Convey any interest in this to John.
