The new attraction, to be called the "FRENZOID," is a giant Viking ship which swings forward, backward, sus pends riders 60 feet upside-down In the air and then complete a, breathtaking series of complete loops.' Caowlnds Vice President and Gen eral Manager VtokI Sutton explains that the‘‘FRENZOID’ experience will be un like any other. “Because the ship’s swing depends on the weight of the passengers, the ‘FRENZOID* will pro vide riders with a different ride each time," Sutton says. “This new ride will give riders and spectators a unique thrill and we’re ex cited to be adding this attraction at Carowinds,” Sutton added. Tlie “FRENZOID’ consists of four steel uprights supports by a main axle. Attached to the axle is a swinging arm to which the Viking ship and a counter weight are attached. The “FREf4Z0ID' will provide SO passengers, seated In 10 rows, a two-and-a-half minute ride. Each seat vtrill be equipped with padded safety bars and padded shoulder har nesses. Because energy for the ship’s next ride will be regenerated during the ship’s deceleration, the ride will be energy efficient. A ride on the “FRENZOID’ will begin with a smooth, powerful rocking mo tion that Increases In speed as the 55 foot long ship climbs higher In the arc it Is traveling in. As it reaches the top of the arc, the shlpwlll come to an upside- down virtual stop, suspending riders 60 f^ above the ground. Hanging their briefly, riders will be In suspense, not knowing whether the ship will go for- vterd and complete the first loop, or backward to try from the other side. Spectators on the ground below will be In suspense as well and some will cheer the free-swinging ship as It falls from the top of the loop at speeds of up to 33 miles per hour. When the ship swings through the loop, riders will experience a brief sen sation of free-filght. TTie “FRENZOID,” manufactured by Intamln In Zurich, Switzerland, Is cur rently being constmcted by the County Fair section of the 77-acre theme park. The new ride will be complete when Carowinds opens for its 1966 season on March 15, 1966. Carowinds Is currently open Satur days and Sundays through Oct. 6 and is located 10 miles south of Charlotte, N.C. and 12 miles north of Rock Hill, S.C. off 1-77 (exit 74).
