PAGE 2 THE TWIG OCTOBER 11, 1965 EDITORIALS 1$ Buckling Up Better? by Beth Blankenship co-editor The seatbelt law has passed In North Carolina, eind there’s really nothing that I can do about It. I'm not one of these liberals who goes against any new enforcement of law simply because they like defying author ity; however, I feel that this (aw has taf(* en away one of my fundamental free doms of choice. I've never worn a seatbelt, and it is a difficult thing for me to adjust to. I found myself speeding down U.S. 1 without my seatbelt on. As I noticed all the other drivers fastened into their seats, I sud denly felt naked without mine. I im mediately pulled my t>elt across me and locked it in place. Maybe it’s the word locked that makes me dislike this law even more. Seatbelts are such ^ “iffy” thing. If I’m involved in an accident and thrown clear ofthecar, nof wearing a seatbelt would ^ve my life. On the other hand, if lam in an accident where I njn head-on into another driver, I know it’s best to have my belt on. I could sit and ponder all the pros and cons, but I need to get back to the topic of freedom of choice. Would Congress tell me that I had to put a certain type bolt lock on my door in order to be more secure? Looking at this law dosely, it amounts to the same thing. It’s a matter of personal safety. I don’t feel this law is or will tie effect ive for two reasons: First, it is a law that is herd to enforce.' The only way an officer could actually tell wt>ether a diiver was or was not) wearing a seatt)elt would be during a traffic check or randomly pulling up t)eside some un fortunate driver In traffic who was caught with his belt “undone.” Secondly, the law is ineffective be cause it does take away a basic freedom of chok:e. I feel that it should be up to the individual whether he or she wants to buckle up. I know, most people ask wt»t about children and seattielts and car seats. Simply stated, children are not old enough to responsibly choose for them selves. Too, an adult does not move around in a car as does a chlM. This seattelt law is yet another law put on the books that is impossible to erv force, much like raisir>g the drinkir>g age. Local govemment gets a pat on the tiack from higher up, and I get an uncomfort able, rough piece of cloth around and ov er my txxJy. STUDENTS AlVD FACULTY: WORKING TOGETHER by Casey Bass This week’s Freshman Seminar was an interview type conversation. The inter view consisted of two faculty members: Dr. Carolyn Gnjbbs; History, ar>d Dr. Bob Vance; Religion, and two Meredith seniors, Lizzy Mills and Dellnda Dunn. Cindy Mays asked the faculty repre sentatives why they teach at Meredith. Dr. Grubbs answered that she ^joyed the students, and she enjoys the oppor tunity to develop close relationships with students. Dr. Vance expressed a feeling of freedom that cannot t>e found by fa culty memtiers at most colleges. The next question raised was why Lizzy and Delinda enjoy being students at Meredith. Delinda expressed that she enjoys the traditk>n and the opportunity for student leadership, and such a good student teacher ratio. Lizzy Mills an swered that Meredith offers a sense of reality. Shealso knows that Meredith has other girls just like her, with her same outlook on life. She also enjoys t«ing at a small college with a big college atti tude. Cindy then asked Delinda and Lizzy what they liked the most about Mere dith's faculty. Delinda said that she liked being able to be open with the faculty. She enjoyed having the chance to be come friends with the faculty. Lizzy said she liked the availability of faculty for question and answer sessions in their of fices. She has developed special friend ships with teachers where she can talk to them any time or even go on walks with them. Next, Cindy asked what the faculty liked most about the students. Dr. Vance replied that for every one student at Meredith who needed to tie pusfied to do an assignment, there are at least ten stu dents who are eager to leam. He really appreciates the basic attitude in the classrooms, and the overall student ex- citenwit. He enjoys being able to look back on his teaching career arxl have fond memories of Meredith students. Wf^ asked what they wished stu dents at Meredith would never do again, Dr. Grubbs and Dr. Vance had very uni que answers. Dr. Grubbs wished that students at Merdith would show better manners. (This was adirect refenal to the freshmen sitting In the balcony who were talking.) She also asked that students never accuse other students of “brown- nosing”. Sfie feels that students who take advantage of the faculty by getting to know them are smart, not pushy. Dr. Vance asked that students should r>ot complain to one professor at»ut another professor. As a student, go to the pro fessor himself and talk about the pro blem. Be careful and concise.
