NEW!) BDIEFS Rook granted stay of execution Raleigh — Scheduled to be executed on Friday morning. Valentine’s Day, 20-year old John William Rook was given a stay of execution earlier this week. Rook is con victed of raping and brutally murdering Ann-Marie Roche in May of 1980 as she walked home from a health spa in Ridgewood Shopping Center. Rook will be the third person executed in North Carolina since the death penally was ruled constitutional in 1976. Miss Roche, a Wake County nurse, was walking along Avent Ferry Road when apparently Rook stopped his car in front of her and she approached the car. Miss Roche’s body was found the following morning. Rook explained his action saying “I was drinking.... I get all crazy ... she shouldn’t have«ome over to the car." He drove to a secluded field and raped Miss Roche, and when she tried to fight back he struck her on the head with a tire iron. Rook was scheduled for a lethal injection on Friday at Central Prison. Counters quit because of vote fraud Manila, Phillipines — Government employee vote counters walked off the job Sun day night to protest what they called falsification of results froni Friday s election between President Ferdinand Marcos and Corazon Aquino. The walkout came after a count showed Marcos with a slim lead in unofficial returns. The protest was so far the most damaging example of massive election fraud engi neered to keep Marcos in power. Underwater probes for Challenger debris could take weeks to complete Cape Canaveral — NASA officials said recovery operations for the Challenger Space Shuttle debris could take several more weeks, as Navy divers and specially equipped vessels probed the Atlantic ocean for debris and wreckage. Recovery efforts continued and there were reports that searchers have found some personal effects of the astronauts, including a helmet. NASA spok«men have refused to confirm that any such remains have been recovered. Meredith stunt plans The Meredith Recreation Association will hold stunt Feb. 19. 1986 in Jones Audito rium at 7:00 p.m. “We hope everyone will come out and support their class," said Dalinda Dunn, MRA President. Listed below are the rules for stunt. Each class shall present a play, and a plaque shall be awarded to the class which accumulates the highest number of points on the following basis: 1. Students ask for anti-racial policy A report on the quality of life of black students on the L). of Conneaicut campus, prepared by the IJConn Black Student Association, prompted the Board of Trustees to vote for an anti-racial harassment policy for the school. The trustees were particularly disturbed by the report’s finding that some white faculty members stigmatize black stu dents as "remedial** and others tell the students they feel uncomfortable around blacks. The fierce intra-state rivalry, usually played out on the football field, has fueled a competitive fund-drive between the student governments and benefiting the'United Wayl • • '• • • u Pornography nixed on campus Plans to show a film — deemed pornographic by the courts — as part of the U. of Hawaii's Sexual Awareness Week fell through because a UH attorney feared legal action against the school. The attorney said if students under 18 viewed the-film on campus, UH could face charges of promoting pornography to a minor. AIDS the subject of plays on campuses Two plays about AIDS have won funding from the Associated Students of San Diego State University. Citing the educational power of theater, and the student government’s responsibility to support education, the AS approved $9,358 for the productions. Suicide a campus problem Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people between 15 and 24, according to Students for Suicide Prevention, a new group at the U. of Connecticut. The students are working to increase suicide awareness by talking to students in UConn's residence halls. The group says UConn averages one suicide attempt per week, and one successful suicide per semester. Students dance all day A dance-a-thon drew more than 1,000 participants at San Diego State U. The 12- hour event, which also featured break dancers, jug^ers and roller disco dancers, raised money for the International Missing Children’s Foundation.
