The art of being successful while living
in a capsule
Women. Some say their place is in the
home. Some believe they should be bare
foot and pregnant. Some believe they
should be simple and silent. I say we
belong at the top;
Getting there isWV always thbii^.
It takes more than a pair of great legs, a
cute smile ^nd a ‘nice'^^o^lityi It, takte
‘Himph” and an inner drive th'at shouts
“Don't stop, never give up!" Often it
means taking chances and.iisking tt'alU.
But, if it’s worth it...
In a society where we women are often
discriminated against, getting to the top
can be a difficult climb. Sometimes we’ll
have to file our nails so we can do some
clawing and backslappingon ourway up.
But if we cant risk tarnishing our **sweet
little girl" reputations, then women don't
belong anywhere except in the home, cat
ering to the demands of outdated hus
bands. We need to learn to take a stand,
speak our minds, be aggressive and hon
estly intellegent. without sounding and
acting like babbling idiots. Fortunately,
Meredith gives us the opportunity to do
both. But, unfortunately, many'refuse to
do either.
When outsiders look at Meredith they
see a college working with women, help>
ing women become better educated and
prepared for life. Dean of Students

I think the (Meredith) judicial system
has a lot to be desired. Everyone must
know by now how bad Linda Morin has
been treated thus far. She was accused of
plagarism by Dr. Gilbert and was found
guilty. 1 know .that judicial bovd is
Dorothy Sizemore said that aside from
the education the college extends, “Mere
dith helps shape the lives of women to
take the role of leadership in today's
world."
Leadership is a characteristic needed to
be on top; It doesn't necessarily mean a
person has^o hold an office but must be a
strongehough character for others to fol
low. Being a leader means taking pride in
what you are' doing, in what you repres
ent. If you can’t do either, then it’s diffi
cult to be effective. A leader, be it in an
organization or a company, must take
initiatives, must take stands, must speak
on behalf of what she represents. I often
wonder if Meredith really works to help
women — us — shape and build our
leadership roles. 1 know for a fact that the
leaders on campus rarely take stands on
issues because they dont want to rub
anyone the wrong way. Most of them are
too busy finding out: what everybody
wants that they can't function as leaders.
They function as followers. And instead
of the “advisors" of these “leaders" in
structing them on how to (behave and
handle leadership positions, they either
say nothing or merely tell them passively
to "use their own discretion" — which
ultimately means nothing Will be done.
Meredith has inflated a community
nothing but a kangaroo court because
two of the judicial members stated that
they “kMW Linda was innocent yet feared
Dr. Gilbert's pull." What kind of system is
this? A dedicate student falsely accused!
Any one with common sense would real
ize how innocent she is. Plus, Dr. Gilbert
has basically ruined her reputation as a
student. Linda is unable to graduate, will
have this on her record, and will have to
postpone heren\ployment in Los Angeles,
California.
that rarely allows the women of tomor
row to learn to accept responsibility —
another factor that is crucial to being on
top. Students often think showing respon
sibility is attending meetings, being.on
time, going to class. But the responsibility
begins once a student is in the meeting, in
the class. We have the responsibility to
make decisions, take stands, commit our
selves. learn —^ and it's these things that
are overlooked.
Being on top also means making sacri
fices, making the time to do what needs to
be done even when you don't want to.
The biggest cop-out 1 hear from students
is the ‘ol “1 don’t have time" line. It boils
down to not being able or capable of
making sacrifices.
Being successful, being on top, is most
of our dreams. Some of you have a head
start. Some of you think you have a head
start. Some of you need to get busy. HI be
the first to admit that it's hard — but
possible — to prepare for ihe real world
when you're living inside a capsule. And,
remember seniors, the bubble bursts May

All this has made Meredith College
look very poorly. Although I am.a stu
dent here and will graduate in May, 1 feel
this boafd should be thoroughly ii^vesti-

family are sufficiently rewarded when the
legal process is underway!
