‘Peak’ times cause long lines
by Casey Bas&, Features Editor
Complaints about long lines and a sin
gle open lunch line spurred the Herald to
investigate these problems.
Mike Beliefeuil, Meredith's new Din
ing Hall Manager, is aware of these prob
lems and said, '^On Monday, Wednesday
and Friday, at 12:00 noon, and on Tues
day and Thursday at 12;20p.m.. the lines
are longest in the dining hall because of
t^Kse being the ending time of classes.**
Beliefeuil said, **At this time, we feed
approximately two-thirds of the students
who eat lunch each day. If students
would wait just 10 or IS minutes, they
would not have to stand in line as long."
The dining hall staff is also aware of
the “peak" times.
*The cooks, student workers, and the
staff prepare themselves for this daily
rush,” Beliefeuil said.
Teak' lunch times also mran ‘peak'
tray pile-ups.
''It is necessary to cut off the belt that
carries the trays occasionally to switch
tray carts. During these 90 or so seconds,
trays tend to pile up," Beliefeuil said. **The
beh only has one speed, and it's not fast
enough to handle the number of girls
finishing their meals at the ‘peak’ times."
Even with these difficult ‘peak' tinies.
there are times when only one line in the
dining hall is open.
According to Beliefeuil, “At these times,
there generally aren't as many students
and one line is enough. (These times
being on the weekends.) The other line is
usually set with food in case the waiting
line is too long in the one single open
line.”
Beliefeuil said he's concerned about
these ‘peak' times, and suggests that some
girls consider waiting a few minutes after
class before coming to the dining hall,
they don't mind standing in line."
Senate committees work to meet
students’ needs
by Paula Tomlinson,
Contributing Reporter
The Meredith College Senate of 1985'
86 has had a very busy and productive
year thus far. Meetings have been held
every two weeks to discuss topics and
suggestions of students’ interest. An over
view of this year’s work follows:
1. A committee was formed to inves
tigate the possibility of new post office
hours and school store hours. It was
decided that the school store hours are
sufficient for students’ needs, and the post

office hours are still being discussed. It
has been proposed to change hours from
3:30-4:30 to 2:30-4i30.
2. A senior conference subcommittee
was formed out of concern for senior
graduation conferences. The following
has been proposed:
The registrar should give students a
copy of the sheet outlining the
requirements for their declared
majors, minors, general education
requirements, etc. This sheet should
be given to the student at the end of
her sophomore year. A copy of this
sheet should also be sent to the
major adyisor of the student. Also,
the registrar should send each senior
by the first week of fall semester
classes a copy of his records as to
what that student lacks toward her
graduation and degree require
ments.
3. A committee was formed to discuss
an itemized list of tuition costs for stu
dents. When discussing the issue with Mr.
Baker, he seemed to think that releasing
another breakdown was unnecessary and
virtually impossible. The committee is

would want to participate in. It would
require the securing of outstanding speak
ers and music on a weekly basis.
3. Most of the facuhy and staff are
involved with their own church services,
so they are not available to assist in a
campus worship service.
4. Many local churches offer outstand
ing college programs within their organi
zational framework."
It is more important for students to be
involved with local churches, according
to Sizemore. “This allows the Meredith
student to participate in worship services
which are a part of the local church and
promotes the nourishing and nurturing
which only a local church can give."
Sizemore also added, think that it is
important that we have spedal services on
special weekends such as parents' week
end and orientation weekend. This pro
vides a sense of worshipping community
which includes facuhy, staff, students and
parents.
Transportation to and from church for
freshmen and sophomores has been one
issue which prompts students to feel a
need for Sunday morning church services
on campus.
When asked her feelings about church
being held on campus, freshman Becky
Barton said “For those who want to go to
church on Sunday, but don't have a car,
this is good." When asked if she would be
more apt to attend if services were held,
senior Jennifer Jackson replied, “yes."
Sophomore Tammy Reeves feels that this
would be great, because she i\ov.^ attends
church, “When 1 can find a ride or when I
can get over there."-
Ministers from Forest Hills, Hayes-
Barton, and Pullen Memorial were con
tacted as to their feelings about Meredith
College holding Sunday services. All three
ministers felt that a worship service would
not give the students the full effect of a
church atmosphere. As David Wilson of
Hayes-Barton explains, “They would be
missinga lot by not havinga local church
setting to be involved in." Rev. Jerry
Hayner of Pullen Memorial feels that
students need to experience a full church
body of believers of all age groups, more
than just a service to attend.
When the problem of transportation
was discussed Rev. Larry Ballard of
Forest Hills stated, “There is an alterna
tive for students without cars."
Many of the churches in the area offer
buses to and from church for interested
students.
St. Mary's College oflers an Episcopal
Sunday morning service. According to
Rev. Janet Wautrous, chaplain at St.
Mary's, the students are required to attend
once a week. The services are offered on
Tuesday night. Wednesday night and
Sunday morning. On Sunday morning
anyone in residence is required to attend.
There is also a Catholic service held at
North Carolina State University each
Sunday morning. According to Rev. Ai
Dash, the campus chaplain, “There are
approximately SOOstudents per Sunday."
