Knight letters to editor 2 M^r^itbHeraid Qctpb^ 9/ Dear Editor; Although it’s only October I am con cerned about a problem Meredith students face every semester during exams—the inconvenient operating hours of the library. When exam-time creeps up on the Meredith campus, students who generally never crack a book try to redeem them selves and conscientious students study twice as hard. When diligent students pack up their books and head over to Carlyle Campbell to study notes, text books, and old tests, they must return to the dorm at 11:00 p.m. when the library closes. Study ing in the dorm frustrates many students. Everyone’s exam schedule being different, some students let off a little steam after having four taxing exams in a row. Then your classmate from the floor below knocks on your door to ask how difficult an exam was you took last semester, while another classmate waits on the phone to ask you if she can copy the notes she missed l^fore tomorrow’s exam. Although some people can study under these conditions, others would prefer to study in the library. Mer^ith accommodates students dur ing exam-time by declaring 24 hour quiet and providing study breaks in the cafete rias. However, are students quiet 24 hours a day? Certainly not. Students would greatly appreciate an additional two hours of study in the library. Two concentrated hours of study in the library are the equi valent of at least three in the dorm. If the library stayed open until one, students could study in the library until closing and then go to bed instead of staying up all night. While another alternative might be to study at N.C. State's library, is it fair to force Meredith students to study off cam pus that late at night when we have an adequate facility? The library staff is always ready to help students in any way they can. Whenever 1 approach the counter, someone readily greets me with a cheerful smile. Therefore I am optimistic that they will try to further ;1.996 accommodate their students by extending the operating hours of the library from 1IKX) p.m. until 1:00 a.m. Mary Helen Hottse Dear Editor, I was extremely angered by the inacur- racries of “A delicious alternative to ice cream,” an article of last week’s Meredith Herald. For starters, TCBY stands for This Counuies Best Yogurt This Can’t Be Yogurt was dissolved two years ago. In addition, the set^ring sizes; small-5 ounces, regular-7 ounces, and large-9 ounces, of smoothies were all quoted incorrectly. It must also be noted that TCBY does weigh its product to assure the customer of her money’s worth and not to prevent giving the extra as expressed in the article. The price of the fhiit smoothie is not 1.9S but 2.10 and it is very different f^m a milk shake in that it is thinner, has no additional milk, and is made with t^it and fhiit juice blended with frozen yogurt. We at TCBY would like to invite Meredith students to come by our three Raleigh locations. Monday-Saturday from 11:00 a.m. — 10:00 p.m. (with exception of the Mission Valley location which is presently open until 11:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday) and on Sunday between 1K)0 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. (These hours are incorrect in the article.) I (hank the staff of the Meredith Herald for considering our product newsworthy. 1 feel Meredith students should be informed of nutritious alternatives to snacks that they crave, yet I feel strongly that informa tion should be researched and presented correctly. Fannie Rowland Meredith Senior and '" - - • - Manager-of !Gaiy TCBY, To the Editor As the newly appointed chairof the Pub lications Board for the school year 1986- 87,1 would like to make administrators, faculty, and students of the Meredith Herald aware of the existence of the Board. It was set up last year to help our publications, especially our newspa^r, and did an out standing job under the chairmanship of Bluma Greenburg. According to Article II of its constitu tion, the Publications Board is “to examine and evaluate present policies that govern our publications” and “to serve as a forum for editors, advisors, and Board members to consider mutual publications concerns.” Above all, it is to be seen as a sounding board to create an effective communica tions network between student publica tions and the Meredith community, and to provide help through constructive criticism. I would diereftxe like to introduce the members of the Board to you and invite you to contact any of us with your concerns—or praises—pertaining to the Meredith publications, The Meredith Herald, Oak Leaves, Aoom, and the Stu* dent Handbook. Members of the Publications Board 1986-88 are: Dr. Burgunde Winz, chair Ms. Renee Keever, vice-chair Ms. Cara Lynn (ilroom, secretary Ms. Chandy Christian, advisor Ms. Becky Auman Dr. Bettie Brewer Ms. Elaine Harbison Ms. Caroline Powell Ms. Carolyn Robinson Ms. Bettie Shipp Ms. Jeanne Yedicka We feel that very enthusiastic and capa ble student editors, assisted by the Mere dith Herald consultant Dr. Robert Kochersberger, will have a successful year and will produce journalistic publications that we can all be proud of. ^
