The purpose of the recent meeting in Reykjavik, Iceland was to layout prelimi nary plans for solving many of the defense problems between the United States and the Soviet Union. The highest leaders in both nations came together for what was supposed to be a modest attempt to set a date for a full-scale summit in the United States. Instead, they moved further away from setting a date for a future summit and deeper into disagreement. After the last session, a media blitz claimed for the most part that the whole meeting was a failure. The U.S. and the Soviet Union both emerge from the meet ing feeling disappointed in the other’s abil ity to negotiate. Now, that the media has made its accusations many of us are still left with a question unanswered: Rey kjavik: Success or failure? Many blame the downfall of the summit on Reagan, saying his position on SDI hin dered the negotiations. According to Time magazine, the Soviet Union offered to m^ke substantial reductions in nuclear weapons if t|ie U.S. agreed to limit the development of Star Wars only to labora- toiy rese^i^ch for the next ten years. Reagan did not feel that he could sup port an agreement that would not allow him or any other President for the next ten years to test missiles. Others blame Gorbachev for the failure to reach agreement. Reagan proposed a plan to deploy SDI for ten years if the Soviets completely eliminated all ballistic missiles from the arsenals of both nations, Gorbachev was not in favor of the idea unless all work on SDI was confmed to the laboratory. While the lack of agreement over Star Wars can be labeled as a major reason for the perception of failure in Reykjavik, some successful results did emerge from the meeting. Both sides decided to experiment with a ten-year extension of the ABM treaty. However, conflict arose over the agree ment in the area of what would take place under the treaty during those ten years. The U.S. believed that they could do every thing under the treaty except actually deploying. The Soviets interpreted the treaty to mean that SDI research could not go any further than the lab. Reagan upon leaving the summit felt that he and Gorbachev moved toward agreement on drastically reduced numbers of intermediate range missiles in both Europe and Asia. Also, agreement was approached on sharply reduced strategic arsenals for both the U.S. and the Soviet Union. However, no date was set for a summit in the U.S. I believe the only failure with the pre summit rests in the minds of the public. It is unrealistic for anyone to think that the problems shared by the two super powers could be solved during the course of one weekend. Reykjavik was an effective means of enabling both sides to find out where their differences and similarities lie so that in the future they will know how to approach the other. I believe that anytime you can get these two superpowers to agree to sit down and talk about the obstacles facing the world you do have success from the start. Any attempt to negotiate is never a failure. It really is the first step toward success. letters to editor Dear Editor, This past weekend my parents attended Parent’s Weekend. On Saturday our fam ily participated in the Pig Pickin’. They charged us $7 for me and $8 each for my parents and my sister. I should have eaten for FREE, my $6,050 tuition does include meals doesn’t it, and $8 a person for my parents and sister is a bifmuch for RAW pig with NO Bar-B-Que Sauce. Plus my father was left holding the knife to cut and serve other people for about 30 minutes and was finally relieved when the ARA worker decided to return, I realize it cost money to provide food and entertainment but the singers during meal time were not necessary and there should have been two separate tickets for the Pig Pickin’ and the Square Dance for those who were unable to attend both ch money as our parents pay this sctlpQ^I feel it is ridiculous to take advan- ts^^^^em the one weekend a year they arej%^ted to visit their daughters and to panicipate in functions on campus. 1 hope that major modifications will take.^fee before next year’s Parent’s Weekend Dawn Hughes Dear Editor, By now the excitement of Comhuskin’ 1986 has subsided. Since I am a senior this year I wanted to take the opportunity to express my appreciation to the people who made Comhuskin’ a huge success. First of all, I want to thank Chandy Christian, Dina Durham, Beth Cunning ham, and Kimberly Eberle. I cannot imagine how much time it took to pull it ail together. 1 appreciate the efforts these people made. You all did a fantastic job! Next. I would like to commend the “Bathtub Ring” and the “Shower Stall Scum.” Both groups performed exception ally well, Thanks for finding time in your busy schedules to share your talent with the college community. I could tell eve ryone enjoyed your musical numbers, for you had everyone in Jones Auditorium singing with you. In addition, 1 must thank the faculty members who participated in Comhusk in’. You are a vital part of the Meredith community, and I was glad to have you there. Dr. English was a good sport to try her hand (mouth) at apple bobbin’. Dr, Jackson turned in a fine effort also as she participated in the Comhuskin’ event. And of course the thanks would not be com plete without expressing appreciation for the faculty's tall tale presented by Dr. Hor- nak, I for one enjoyed hearing the stories behind some of our professors. It was great. Thanks must al§o be expressed to eve ryone on the Comhuskin’ committees and to the judges, ff it were not for each one of you, there could not be a Comhuskin’. I especially thank each Comhuskin’ chair person for her hard work, diligence, and patience. As a collective group you are the best. You made Comhuskin’ ‘86 a real contest — I know the judges had some tough decisions to make. Thank you judges for taking an evening to spend on campus. It was a hard job-thank you for doing it. Melanie Herring Class of 1987 Dear Editor, I would like to extend a huge “Thank You” to the class of 1990. As far as I’m concerned, they made Comhuskin’ 1986, the big success that it was. This freshman class seems to be a very special one. I’m sure they will continue to generate their positive attitude as time goes by. Once again, thank you freshmen for your participation, positive attitudes and all of your great sportsmanship during Comhuskin’!
