UARLYIE CAMPBEU MEREDITH COLLEGE Meredith Herald Vd. 3 No. 5 Meredith College, Raleigh, NC 27607 December 4,1987 New physical education major proposed ■t]y Nancy WBStherly Due to ttie growing interest in physical fitness and students’ demands, the Meredith physical education department has proposed two new majors that may possibly be added to the list of majors offered at the College. TTiese two new programs are a dance n^jor and physical education major witii a o>ncen- tration in fitness. Current^, Meredith off^ a fitness minor, but these proposed majors invc^ve a more extensh,« curriculum. T\m core requirements are the same for both the najors. TTie requirennents consists of 16 hours in the following courses: Biology 101 and 141.Biology322and 342 (Human Anatorr^and Riysioiogy). Health Education 100 (Current Health Issues). Health Educa tion 200(Rrst Aid). Physical Education 282 (Prevention and Care of Atiiletic Injuries), and Physical Education 482 (Kinesic^ogy). The requirements for a.dance major are Dance 156 (Imfffovisltation). TTieatre 245 (Stage Craft). Dance 255 (Movement Fun- dam^tais). Dance 256 and 356 (Composi tion I and II). Danes 357 (Creative Move ment forChildr^). Dance 359 (Dance His tory). Dance 453 (Danb Theatre-Perfor- mance Croup), Dance 455 (Dance Produc tion). Dance 456 (Dance Practicum), and [fence 437 (Teaching Methods of Dance). Also, a dance major must fulflll 9 hours ^ dance technique at Level II or above. The requirements for a physical education m^or with a fitness concentration are as follows: one hour of each of the following; aerobics, conditioning, muscle tone and stretch, aquatic fitness, weight training, modem jazz, tennis, raquetbali, swimming II or higher: Home Economics227(Nutrition). Physical Education 227 (leisure Activities for Specific Populations). F^ysical Education 289 (History and Principles). Physical Edu cation 329 (Theoiy of Pf^cal Fitness). Ph^icai Education 428 (Management Rt- ness Progranns and Business Facilities). Phys ical Education 429 (Exercise Prescription) and Physical Education 486(Physical ^uca- tion Practicum). In additiCHi. tm buaness courses are recommended: 346 and 366. Students with an interest in either of these nnajors should see Mrs. Jay Massey, head of the physical education department, for further information. Obviously, student support of these majors will increase the chances that the new physical education and dance ntajors wil beconrw a permanent part of ttie Meredith program. Moderates elect Smith as convention president ■by Angle Stroud The moderate faction in the N.C. Baptist Convention succeeded in electing a moder ate President Leon Smith, on Tuesday, Nov. 10 In Greensboro. Many Baptists in the state becanne con cerned about the cxitrol of the North Carol ina Baptist CcMivention after fundamental ists gained control of the Board of Tl^jstees at Southeastern Seminary last rnonth. W. Randall Lo!l«y, who recently resigned as president of Southeastern, nominated Smith in a speech before the convention. "It was the smoothest calmest conven tion that I have e\«r attended." said Dr. John \Ateems. Although the moderates did virin this year. Weenfis stressed that the battle is not over as long as there is a conservative faction within the convention. (Photo by Anne Bailey) Vice-president, public relations director resign suddenly ■by Becky Butts It fias been over a month since the College Relations Office became the Office of Publications, and things do not appear to have settled in that office. On Nov. 2. Molly IDeDominlcus. the new director of public relations, resigned. DeDominicus b^an her job on Oct. 7. and worked for three and a half weeks before resigning. Dennis Teylor. who was named vice- president of institutional advancement on July 1. has also resigned. When questi oned about the sudden departure of both administrators. Dr. John Weems. Dr. LaRose Spooner, and Carolyn Robinson, college editor and director of publica- tions. declined to comment. Spooner said she vrauld issue a state ment wh^ the director's position is filled.
