Meredith Herald Vol. 4 No. 3 Meredith College, Raleigh, NC 27611 September 20,1988 CAMPAIGN ’88: Freshman Elections by Krista Holloman The Meredith Class of 1992 elected its first officers on Friday, September 9. After a week of campaigning, making flyers, and giving speeches, eleven freshmen were happy to be given governing offices. The Freshmen had two opportuni ties to attend a pre-election meeting to learn the rules of running for office and the responsibilities they would have in that office. September 7 was the final day for filing for a position. Seventeen students responded to that invitation. After that, it was onto the campaign trail. Posters were taped to the walls and doors of Vann and Stringfield dorms. On Friday, September 9, all candi dates gave brief speeches promot ing themselves at Freshman Expe rience. Once the campaign promises were made, the candidates could only wait with hope. Voting took l$^pdqner place during lunch and dinner on Friday. Results were posted at 7:00 P.M. Friday, giving the new officers great enthusiasm for the weekend. There were four offices not filled during elections. The offices of Treasurer, Board of Elections, Stunt, and Ciass Marshals remain open. The class president will have those positionsfilled by Friday, September 16. Hope Proctor, Board of Elec tions Chair, says “I was a little dis appointed that all the offices weren't filled, but I don’t think it'll hurt the freshman class." She added that maybe some freshmen may have been intimidated and afraid they’d lose. All in all, the freshman class is looking forward to a great year mak ing a name for themselves at Meredith. Writing Center offers help to all by Jayne Poder As the Writing Center moves into its second year, it also moves towards satisfying more of Meredith’s com municative needs. With nine new tutors and four returning tutors. Nan Miller, head of the Writing Center, calls their diversifications “added specialties." The center has a specified tutor for re-entry student help, for resume writing, for library research assist ance, and in particular, a tutor for ESL (English as a second language) help. Miller says that Meredith's international students used the cen ter so often last year that this year Kara Richards will be available especially for helping these students. Another new addition to the Writ ing Center Is the Exercise Box. Although students are welcome at any stage in the writing process, the center has provided the exercise boxes rather than having tutors proofread. The boxes contain exer cises to aid In eliminating any grammatical problems. Miller also recommends the grammar exercises as study aids for the competency test. Even though the center will not provide individual help for the com petency test, there will be three intense study sessions on the evenings of November 6, 7, and 8. A computer terminal has also been added to the Writing Center, and help is available. Miller stresses that “The Writing Center is not a remedial service. It’s for any writer, any class, at any level, and it’s a great habit to get into." Writing Center hours are Sunday 6- 8 p.m., Monday 3-5 p.m. and 8-10 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 10-12 a.m. and 3:30-5:30 p.m., and Wed nesday 3-5 p.m.
