Vol. 4 No.yT ;5 Meredith College, Raleigh, NC 27611 Claiming power: Staley Lecture Series 1988 by Cara Lynn Croom Dr. Nancy Hardesty, professor from Clemson University, is on campus this week as the visiting Staley Lec turer. Her lectures center around the theme of "Christian Women, Claim ing Our Power” and are entitled "Choosing and Being Chosen" and “Calling and Being Called.” Dr. Har desty is focusing on the issues that relate to Christian women in today’s society and will offer the second lec ture on Wednesday, October 5, at 10 a.m. in Jones Chapel. The first lec ture was offered on Monday, at 10 a.m. The Staley Lectures were estab lished by Thomas F. Staley, an afflu ent businessman, to challenge Amer ican students in small Christian col leges to combine intellectual learning with Christian growth. Mr. Staley is a member of the Reynolds family and was instrumental in establishing Reynolds and Company as a major corporation. Mr. Staley died In Sep tember, 1977, and the duties of the program are now administered by members of his family and an advi sory board.. Staley Distinguished Christian Scholars Lecture Program allows small Christian colleges, like Meredith, to choose both topic and speakerand then helps fund the lec ture series. A committee of Meredith students, faculty and staff devised the topic and chose to ask Dr. Har desty. The topic was developed out of the suggestion of a Meredith stu dent because of her concern over the issue of women and authority. Dr. Hardesty was chosen because of her renown as a speaker and author of such books as Inclusive Language in the Church (1987), Women Called to Witness (1984) and Great Women of Faith (1982). Meredith is privi leged to have Dr. Hardesty as a lec turer on campus this week.
