M E D E D I T H HEKALD Vol. 4 No. 9 November 1,1988 Meredith College, Raleigh, NC 27611 Task Force on Pursuit of Excellence Nears Its Goal A little-known but very important com mittee of faculty, alumnae and current students at Meredith has been hard at worl since May 1987 to evaluate excel lence at Meredith and to recommend steps to take in the future to improve • 'Meredith's excellence. The Task Force for the Pursuit of Excellence, chaired by Dr. Alan Page of the Religion Department, has already developed a list of assumptions about Meredith College. These assumptions cover a wide range of topics, from the quality of student life to the physical facilities of the campus, from the goals by Cara Lynn Croom of education to the cost of education at Meredith. The assumptions that the Task Force has listed will now be used as a basis for making recommendations to Presi dent John Weems. These recommen dations will touch on ways to keep edu cation affordable, ways to make the residence life more conducive to study and ways to increase opportunities for faculty and staff development. Dr. Page stated that the Task Force hoped to be able to make its report by the end of this semester. Educational scholarships available by Jayne Potter There are a number of educational scholarships available for the 1989-90 academic year. All of the scholarships require a commitment to teach In the North Carolina public schools for a designated period of time. Any inter ested students can contact Dr. Kratzer in 122 Joyner or at 8399. The Mary Morrow Scholarship Trust offers at least one thousand dollars to college juniors for their senior year. Two students will be chosen from Mere dith’s education department, based on need. The deadline is January 9. The most stringent qualifications are needed for the Paul Douglas Teachers Scholarship Program. Candidates must have a 3.0 or higher and have been in the top ten percent of their high school class. Four Meredith students received this award last year. There is an April deadline. An unlimited number of applicants will be accepted for the NEA National Teachers Competition. A five hundred, a twelve hundred and fifty, and a twenty- five hundred dollar scholarship will be awarded for the senior year. Applications for the Prospective Teachers Scholarship are due March 1; those received after the deadline will be considered if there are funds availa ble. This scholarship offers a maximum of two thousand dollars for no more than four years in undergraduate study. Majors in math, science, a second language, chemistry, computer educa tion, economics, political science, phys ics, academically gifted, and vocation ally handicapped are eligible for the Teaching Fellows. It offers up to four thousand dollars for the junior and senior years. Regional interviews are required as is the maintenance of a 2.5 GPAand a major in one of these areas. Deadline Is sometime after January. While fr>e Task Force is not directly linked to the self-study that Meredith is now conducting, the Task Force's find ings may be used in developing both long and short range goals for Meredith. Any student who may wish to express an opinion concerning excellence at Meredith may speak to Dr. Page or may contact Casey Bass Bunch who is a student representative on the Task Force. Student input is welcomed by this committee because much of the Task Force’s report will deal with stu dents and the quality of education. Campus Scouts on the Move Kay Jernigan represented the Mere dith Carnpus Scouts at Carolina Rain bow Girl Scout Statewide Camporee on Oct. 22. She joined four Campus Scouts from the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill as Interest Area Coordi nators. The Campus Scouts spent most of the day working with Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts in various workshops. Dur ing the afternoon, they had an opportun ity to talk with leaders about what Cam pus Scouts can offer to college students and to the Girl Scout Council. What can Campus Scouts offer? The opportunities are unlimited. Are you interested in camping, travel, leader ship training and experience, being a summer camp counselor, networking opportunities, or making a difference in a girl's life? Campus Scouts offers all this and more. The Meredith Campus Scouts will meet on Nov. 9 at 7 pm in the Student Leadership Suite. New members are welcome.
