M E D E D I T H HEKALD Meredith College, Raleigh, NC 27607 April 4,1989 Information, Fun Planned for Alcohol Awareness Week by Marlea Doane Vol. 4 No. 21 Kappa Nu Sigma Holds Induction Ceremony On March 16, Kappa Nu Sigma held * its annual spring induction ceremony and dinner. Alumnae members, pres* ent members and the new inductees were invited to hear Dr. Sarah Lemmon, college historian, speak on “Meet Mrs. Madison.” Kappa Nu Sigma is a national aca demic honor society which was founded in 1923. Membership is based on a stu dent’s grade point average and her number of credit hours. Alt credit hours , must have been earned at Meredith. The society awards scholarships to ris ing juniors and sophomores with the highest academic averages in their class. Dr. Sarah English is the society’s faculty advisor. She feels the aim of the society is to "promote scholarship and learning on the campus." The seniors and juniors invited to join the society were as follows: Bonnie L Allen, Liana Bissette, Holly Bivins, Amanda Brooks, Georgia Edwards, * Gale Garrison, Kelli Harris, Laurie Hegler, Tammy Holder, Paula Holland, April Hooper, Tonya Jones, Gladys Langdon, Rhonda; Mitchell, Kristen Myers, Ellen Newlwld, TiWany Noah, Angela Overby, Lis^ Pate, f^mela Pol lock, Laura Prestwood, Kara Richards, Pamela Sain, Salma Smith, Jennifer Snow, Bitlie Stewart, Carolina Teater, Leah White, Anne Whiteside, and Iris Wilkins. The spring ceremony is one of three times during the year that members meet. In the fall, senior members were inducted at a tea. On the Saturday of graduation there will be a Vneeting to induct graduating seniors. SGA has some informative as well as exciting things planned for Alcohol Awareness Week. April 2-7. Monday evening there will be a Raleigh police officer on campus talk ing about N.C. drinking laws. Tuesday evening there will be a movie dealing with the subject of drinking and driving. Wednesday, Stan Yancy, the chaplain from Charter Northridge Hospital, will speak in chapel and there will also be a picnic in the courtyard. In addition to these events there will be “Mocktail Competition" (as opposed to cocktail). "Each class will make their own drinks and the winning class will be awarded a substantial amount of money," said Cheryl Alderman, the Alco hol Awareness co-chair. Hit and Run in Front of by Laura McArthur On Sunday, March 19 around 7 p.m., an unidentified college-aged girl was the victim of a hit and run accident in front of the Meredith campus. The girl was on Hillsborough Street when a white male around 35 years old driving a small, white pickup truck struck her, knocking her through the stoplight approximately thirty feet. The driver did not stop but turned into the Meredith campus attempting to hide from police. The Raleigh Police Department found the man sitting in his truck in the parking lot in front of Vann Residence Hall. The police found ten unopened beer cans, six or eight empty cans, and some mari- i:.^RLYLl CAMPBELL LIBRARY MEREDITH COLLEGE In hopes of getting the faculty involved in the awareness activities, SGA has given the faculty the job of judging the ‘‘Mocktail Competition.” The winner of this competition will be announced at the picnic. On Thursday, an information packet will be given to students. The group that sponsors College Alcohol Awareness Weeks puts out a newsletter of happenings on campuses around the country and has expressed a particular interest in how the week goes here at Meredith. At the picnic photographers will be taking pictures that may appear in a national newsletter. “This just may put Meredith on the map again," said Alderman. Campus juana in possession.
