Academic Awards Day Honors Best at l\/leredith

On Monda^prii 10 at 10 am, Meredith
held its annual'dpademic awards ceremony
to honor those students who have excelled.
Dr. Sandra Thomas welcomed students,
parents and faculty while Rev. Sam Caroth-
ers offered the invocation. Dr. Allen Burris
reminded the audience of the reason for
gathering, to "honor. . . congratulate the
student"
Rising junior Kelly Morris received the Ida
Poteat Scholarship and the Carolyn Pea
cock Poole Scholarship. Rising senior Anne
Whiteside also received the Ida Poteat
Scholarship.
The English department presented awards
to Victoria Logan (Norma Rose Scholar*
ship), Ailyson Honeycutt (Marion Fiske
Welch Scholarship) and Debra Brown
(Peggy Harris Scholarship). Brown also
received the Elizabeth Avery Colton Award
for best piece in the Acorn.
Elizabeth Fitzsimmons received the Fran
kie G. Weems Award for best artwork in the
Acorn as well as the Best in Show Award for
the student art show.
The Martha Nell Tucker Freshman Biol
ogy Award was presented to Kimberly Ann
Weisenborn. The John Yarbrough Biology
Awards were presented to sophomore
Raven Joyner and junior Georgia Edwards.
The CRC Press Freshman Chemistry
Awards were presented to Mary Marsh
Thrower and Bonnie K. Bugnar.
Mathematics awards were presented to
freshman Mary Beth McNeill (Vallie Tillot-
son Nelson Mathematics Award) and senior
Karen Knight (Outstanding Senior in Mathe
matics and Computer Science Award).
Home Economics Service Awards were
presented to Terri Pegram and Carol
Weaver while the Outstanding Senior
Awards were presented to Cheryl Whitfield
and Shandra Lanier.
Nan Miller presented Senior Writing Cen
ter Tutor Awards to Ella Quinn Smalto, f^ary
Fracker and Lisa Pate.
Hall of Fame Awards in Business and
Economics were presented to the following
students; Ann Marie Rice, Susan Wiggs,
Lisa Wilson, Kathy Strange, Kris Hardiman,
Kathryn Fisher, Jan Pope, Kim Chavis, Les
ley Holloway and Brandie Norris. Wilson
also received the Wall Street Journal
Achievement Award while Hardiman also
received the Tomorrow's Business Woman
Award.
SGA President Gina Howard was honored
with the Lois E. Frazier Award in business
and economics as well as the Academic
Excellence Award presented to the graduat
ing senior with the highest academic aver
age.
The Ellen Amanda Rumley Scholarship
Award was presented to April Denise
Hooper. SNCAE Outstanding Future Teach
er Awards were presented to Carrie Schmidt
and Mary Claudia Mason.

Meredith College Graduation Plans Set
The Meredith College commence
ment ceremonies are scheduled for
Sunday, May 14 at 10 am in the Mere
dith Amphitheatre. Approximately 475
students are expected to receive de
grees.
Ms. Judy Woodruff, chief Washing
ton correspondent for "The MacNell/
Lehrer NewsHour," will be the gradua
tion speaker. (In the event of Inclement
weather, the commencement ceremo>
nies will be held in Reynolds Coliseum).
Dr. John Hewett, pastor of the First
Baptist Church In Asheville, NC. will be
the Baccal^reate speaker on Wed
nesday, a);.jo am in Jones
Chapel.

Dr. John Hewett
