Trivium Pursuit Was the Name of the Game
Opening Convocation Looks to the Past
by Jayne Potter
Last year, opening convocation
at Meredith took a look at the future,
but this year, Meredith took a look at
the past. On Monday, August 28,
President Weems and Meredith
faculty members opened up the year
with a game of “Trivium Pursuit.”
Trivium (the divisions of the
liberal arts) Pursuit was a game like
Trivial Pursuit with a twist. The red
team, senior Tracy Sternberg and
sophomore Paige Bunter, and the
blue team, junior Nan Smith and
freshman Blaire Jones, competed
against each other in a batde of wits.
Before the game, President Weems
pointed out that winners are those
^ who retain and understand what they
learn. But these contestants had a
little help from some experts —
Napoleon, Algebar, Karl Marx,
Aristotle, and Moses.
Dr. Frank Grubbs, as Thomas
Jefferson, claimed that John F.
Kennedy and Mick Jagger had both
attended Harvard, when the correct
answer was the London School of
Economics. Other experts, how
ever, were more helpful. Isadora
Duncan (Allison Caldwell),
Michaelangelo (John Bell), Dorothy
Parker (Louise Taylor), and Aris-

The Meredith infirmary has a
new name and a new philosophy.
Now called the Carroll Health Cen
ter, it’s not just for sick students any
more.
“We want to teach women to be
responsible for their own health and
well being,” explained Ruth Pearce
RN, director. “We are concentrat
ing on education for total health,
focusing on all things that keep our
students mentally and physically fit”
A number of different programs
and services have been incorporated
into the health center to accomplish
this goal. One that was requested a
great deal last year is a gynecology
totle (John Creagh) all made ap
pearances — some helpful, and some
not.
The blue team won by correctly
answering the eternal question is the

lowing the game Dr. Weems pointed
out that this was a knowledge game.

clinic.
“We had so many requests last
year to have a gynecologist on staff,”
said Pearce. “I am very pleased that
we were able to open this clinic.”
Students must have an appoint
ment for the clinic which is held on
Wednesdays from 2:(X) - 5:00 p.m.
Katherine Blalock, a family nurse
practitioner specializing in gynecol
ogy, will conduct the clinic and a
number of gynecological services
are available. A routine physical
which includes a pap smear, blood
test, and urinalysis will cost the
student $28.
