Movie Review
"Immediate Family" Provides
Little Out of the Ordinary

If you’re iookiog for anodier famous performance of Glenn Close like in
"Fatal Attracticm" or "Dangerous Liasons," "Immediate Family"is no compari
son. It is a typical movie with choppy scenes, cute dialogue and an obvious
ending with a twist in the middle.
"Immediate Family" drags out the traumas of not having a baby. Linda and
Michael Septer, played by Glenn Close and James Woods, have been married
for 10 years and are infertile. After trying several fertility drugs, they opt for
open adq)tion. Open adoption allows the birth mother to choose the adoptive
parents of her baby.
The characters in the movie show realistic emotions when dealing with
(heir problems. However, their emotions get too dramatic at times. Linda drinks
an entire bottle of wine to relieve her fnislrations. Michael is the compassionate
husband who tries to comfort his wife but can never find the answers. Lucy the
young unwed mother is played by Mary Stuart Masterson. Masterson acts too
tough for the role of Lucy. Rarely does she mention the baby as hers until the
time of adoption.
"Immediate Family"does offer some suggestions to unwed mothers. Lucy
deals Hath abortion, adoption or keeping the baby. It is a refreshing change for
a young unwed mother to help a family who is less fortunate. As Lucy explains
to the Septers, “We’re good people.”
The most memorable scene in the movie is when Linda and Lucy become
immediate family. They discover a common love for Van Morrison and dance
around the living room, holding hands and singing. It is during this scene, the
audience can feel the bond between the two women.
If you have two hours to kill and five dollars to spend, then "Immediate
Family" is for you but don’t expect great acting.
