MEREDITH HEDALD Vol 5 No.9 Meredith College, Raleigh, NC 27607 December 5,1989 Accreditation Team Evaluates College by: Jayne Potter The accreditaticHi team from the South* em Associaticm of CoUeges*Scboo)s evalu* ated Meredith from Nov. 6-9. The team, which consisted of 11 members from iO colleges, comes once every 10 years to compare and evaluate Mer^ith to other colleges throughout the United States. The association was impressed with the friend liness at Meredith — from students, fac ulty, and staff — and the team, said Dr. Susan Gilbert, was “glowing with praise" for Meredith. In the accreditation process, a team looks at every aspect of a school. They examine the library holdings and student body records, check faculty credentials, visit classes, look at class syllabi, check safety precautiois, evaluate dorm life, and even eat in the dining hall. Dr. Susan Gilbert, who arranged for the visit and helped coordinate the meetings, said, “In ixepahng f(»- the visit, we looted at every thing!” Hie team included college presidents, vice-presidents for student development, and undergraduate and graduate profes sors. Coming from all over Uie country, the representatives were from science/math schools, as well as liberal arts schools, from big and small schools, and some from church-related schools. Gilbert points out that because Ameri can education is so independent, in that it is not government-controlled, the education system needs a standard. The accreditation process serves as that standard by encom passing the educational institutions which have equally high requirements for aca demics and overall campus life.
