If all goes as planned, those ^o attend are sure to be pleased with the unique audio-visual presentation. "Me making a speech is a contradiction in terms,” said Dr. Weems. "I’m just going to have a conversation with the audience.” "This topic, Expanding the Boundaries, can be explored as a two- headed approach,” he explained. "Number one, we’d like to demonstrate that Meredidi has all sorts of iiuemational opportunities for education beyond the campus. And, number wo, we want to go beyond the traditiorul teaching approach by demonstrating how laser discs, cable televlsi»i, and computers can enhance the studeius’ education.” Dr. Weems says he won’t be alone during the convocation: several faculty and staff members will be on hand to discuss international studies opportunities and Dr. Craig Green will beam in "live and remote” via Meredith’s on-campus cable vision. Low-cost computer software programs wiU demonstrate fascinating views the world and even the stars of die cosmos. [During the interview. Dr. Weems spent several minutes demonstrating two IBM programs that impressed even this die-hard Macintosh Cui.1 "Expanding the Boundaries" surely typifies the attitude of our College, both on campus and beyond. Worship service challenges community Tearing Down the Walls Sam Carothers, Campus Minister, opened the first worship of die year with a challenge to tear down the many walls we buOd in order to keep ourselves isolated from others who are different He related a story about his father's uncanny knack for building beautiful stone walls. '^e are builders on this planet,” Mr. Carothers said. "Some walls are beautiful and allow us to be creative. But we’re all prone to build negative walls, too.” Carothers explained that negative walls can be physical, like the ones we build to keep our backyards separate from our neighbors’, or mental walls like the ones we build toshield ourselves from those whose gender, race, flnandal background, nationality, or theological background is different from our own. As a PMS, she handles financial matters for men called for duty and makes arrangements widi fiunily members in cases of a death. For the past four weeks, her unit has been on alert and several units have already been dispatdied to serve in [classified locations]. At the beginning of the summer, Charmay was given the option of serving in either Italy or l\irkey from September 25 until Ooober 13. On Wednesday, she told reporters that "It’s no longer an if, and, or but situation. It looks like I’ll definitely be going. ” However, on Friday, she spoke with her First Sergeant and offered to take a different detail in Belgium for two and a half months during the spring semester in order to avoid being dispatched now. Her First Sergeant agreed to the deal. Because she volunteered to take another detail, she most likely will not be called for another detail during her college career.
