Student Poll: What is your opinion of the Gulf War? Worried, tense feces joined together in the residence hall parlors to hear the late-breaking news on television • live and remote from the Middle East. Small clusters of students could be found on every hall, hanging on the words of the television reporters as they described the sights and sounds of bombs and missiles Hghtirig up the night sky in Iraq. On January 16, the night President George Bush sent the American and allied forces to “liberate Kuwait," Herald reporters Jane Kennedy and Julia Haskett asked Meredith students for their initial reactions to the news. Syh^ No^^ngcr 1 think that we went to stop agression but we are the aggressors-we bombed Baghdad, one of the oldest cities in civilization, destroying history. When you pick up arms, you are not sohdng anything. There will always be a problem between these people and the Westerners until both sides are satisfied. Showing our military strength does nc^ show our intellectual strength. I am not satisfied with a United States, I want a united world. Andrlette Vaught lAndriette’s father is serving in the Middle East.] I feel bad because there are a lot of people who will die. He tSaddam] needs to be stopped but it’s bad the way we have to do it. Rebecca Hodges I hope the war ends quickly. Tm concerned about my brother or boy friend having tt> go over there. Robin Hicks I just wish the war would end. laraHendley It’s terrible, horrible and I’m veiyscared.Ido support the men over there, though I don’t support the war. The whole concept of war scares me since they have been talking about terrorist attacks. Diane Luehm I think we should support the president in bathe’s doing and especially the men who are defending us and the Kuwaiti govemmeru. Erin Webb I’m for our involvement in the Middle East and I support our troops. I think it’s important for us to do all we can to preserve democracy in the worid. Jennifer Worster I’d really prefer that we were not involved but since we are I believe we should not create another Vietnam-we should support our troops. I will march for peace and if I were called I would serve. Margl Adams I hope people support President Bush. He’s doing the best job he caa There are a lot of things we dont kiK)w. It's tliiie to unite. Molly Howell I don’t personally agree with us being over there. A lot of lives will be lost Butnowthatwe are at war, me must support our troops. They need us. Cindy Justls Whether or not we support the war, we need to support the troops. It’s President Bush's point that this will not be another Vietnam that I approve; if we support the troops, it won’t be.
