Classifieds Letters... continued from page 3 I don’t plan on joining peace marches because there is little peace in public displays of dissent However, I believe in peace with all my heart, and I will continue to pray for it everyday. My husband believes in peace too; as a Vietnam veteran, he also believes in fighting for his brothers, here and around the world, to free them from the oppression of men like Hider and Hussein in order that people be allowed to live peacefully within an “unoccupied” homeland. Lastly, we both believe in the words spoken by the most peace- filled Person who ever walked the earth, “Greater love than this no man has, that he lay down his life for his friends” Qohn 15:13). Sincerely, Nancy J. Jones Editor resporjds First of all, my sincere apologies to anyone who felt the purpose of the editorial mentioned in Heather's and Nancy’s letter was to insult the intelligence or sensibilities of the reader. The night of January 16 found another reporter and me walking through almost every residence hall specifically to ask the opinions of the students willing to talk to us. Many said they were against the United States' involvement in the war. I asked students why they thought that, if there is a body of students on this campus who felt that way, there was not more of a visible presence of that opinion. A sophomore suggested that “there is a girl school mentality that says you shouldn’t go against authority or be aggressive.” Another student, a senior, said that she felt “the politics of the war were too complex for most people, not just students, to understand and so it’s hard to take a stand on something that is ambiguous to them." As for the war being a peripheral event for women in general, in no way do 1 suggest that having friends and loved ones serving in harm’s way is not a tragic and extremely painful event. A friend of mine suffers from post-traumatic stress syndrome and I am aware that the onset of this disorder happens after an event as Nancy states and as the prefix post- implies. ^ Indeed the effects of this war are and will continue to have a devastating impact on all of us. Some of us will lose a brother, a son, a boyfriend, a husband, a friend. Just as our Iraqi sisters will lose theirs. If the alleged loss of student self-government could galvanize last year’s student body into a resounding chorus of protest leading to a sit-in in Johnson Hall, it just seemed to me that the possible loss of the lives of our loved ones might prompt even a small vocal response from this year’s student body. If I’m wrong, s6 be it. Everyone is entitled to respond to a crisis in whatever fashion they choose. Even saying, “I don’t know how I feel” is fine. Your Letters Welcome The Herald welcomes all letters from students who wish to voice their opions and feelings about the Gulf crisis. It is only through dialogue and discussion that we can gain a fuller and broader appreciation of the way in which this unfortunate crisis affects each of us. Please carefully read the Letters to the Editor Policy on page three. While the editor doesn’t mind printing “scathing” letters directed towards her, please be well aware that the rest of you are protected from such a response. No letter which attacks another student for voicing her opinion will be published in this newspaper. Personals Happy Birthday HavenI Best Wishes!
