Editorial
Heratdfolds; CentemtUdetUtkmwiU be the

Rather dramatic headline.
Unfortunately, that's the grim
reality facing this weekly
newspaper whose staff includes
three still enthusiastic but
extremely overworked reporters
and an editor who holds a 30-
hour per week job while
maintaining a full-time class
schedule. We literally cannot
maintain a level of high quality
without your support
If you want to see the Herald
continue past Spring Break, here
is what you can do.
Every academic department
employs student assistants, one
of whom could be assigned the
department reporter. The Art
Department could submit a story
about Dr. Greene's pen and ink
drawings celebrating the Charter
Centennial. The Music, Speech
and Theatre Department could
write a story about upcoming
performances. The Religion
Department could write a story
on the conflict in the Baptist State
Convention and the effect it may
have on Meredith students. The
History and Politics Department
could offer students a background
on the Middle East and a
discussion of the events leading
Dear Editor,
In the February 4th issue of
the Herald a student responded
to the editorial of January 28
Passive Activism." Within the
student's response was a
declaration that the editor's ideals
had no place on Meredith's
campus and that the student
personally would like to find an
alternate learning facility for the
editor. While I believe this student
had a legitimate right to disagree
with the editorial, I believe her
suggestion to send the editor away
is a mistake. I was horrified upon
reading this remark.

to the war.
Every student organization
could appoint a Herald Reporter
who would be responsible for
submitting stories of interest to
the campus at large about that
group's activities. Intramurals,
dances, movies, special events,
speakers: the list of activities these
groups provide is almost endless.
The most logical place to promote
these activities and to report their
outcome is the campus
newspaper.
Surely there are some business
students who would like to be
able to impress a potential
employer with her previous
experience. Serving as an
advertising representative
increases her skills in
communication, marketing and
business management and
initiates contacts in the business
world.
A liberal arts college must
include students who need
practical experience in written
communications: copy editors
proofread and edit articles, rewrite
press releases, and gain useful
computer word processing skills.
Our fine art students must
count among their number
While I realize her caide intent
was not to perpetuate
narrowmindedness, what the
student seemed to suggest was
that we rid ourselves of our
“misinformed" editor because she
does not hold the same views as
the Meredith Student. Might I
suggest that those who choose to
surround themselves with people
who only hold views which
substantiate their own will
inevitably find themselves alone.
My point here is that Meredith
College is the most homogeneous
environment to which I have ever
someone who wants real-life
experience in graphic design.
Being able to use state-of-the art
page layout software earns your
editor $45 per hour for free lance
jobs. Wouldn't you like to have
that kind of skilP You can, if you
work as a typesetter for the Herald
If you can give nothing else,
can you give one hour on
Mondays to help get the papers
distributed? Until we find
volunteers willing to help with
distribution, we'll be fonxd to
eliminate delivery ask everyone
to trek to Cate Center for her own
copy. It's simply not appropriate
to ask those same three reporters
to handle delivery in addition to
everything else they've done that
week.
The page$ of this week's
edition should illustrate to you, in
graphic detail, how desparate this
situation is. We want you to have
a newspaper you can be proud
of, one that you want to read, one
that you look forward to reading.
If you want to be a part of this
important and worthwhile
endeavor, call the Herald office at

been privy. While on one level it
is a very comfortable
environment, it is also an
unrealistic one. Adding
homogeneous views to the list of
qualities held by Meredith
students eliminates our purpose
for being here, education.
I personally believe that our
editor has truly encouraged some
of the Meredith students to think.
Regardless of whether I agree
with all she has to say, I admire
her for doing just that
