Letters to the Editor Editorial Smart Choice Suppose, for example, you were given the choice to take your clothes off and pose nude for a national magazine for some relatively small amount of money. Would you say yes? This month’s pictorial is entitled “The Women of Women’s Colleges.” Now, dorm life being what it is, we know what naked women look like. However, Victoria’s Secret patrons not withstanding, it's doubtless that we all run around in undergarmets the likes of which these women are barely model ing. They are all intelligent and consci entious about sisterhood and women's issues,” says managing photo editor JefT Cohen in the accompanying story. This from a man who gives us photos of a young women wiUi her blouse unbut toned down to there, and WEARING GLASSES to prove that she’s both busty and brainy! You won’t find any of your sisters from Wellesley or Holyoke in this edi tion. Undergrads from Bryan Mawr and Barnard are missing. In another don’t- forget-the-inielligent-angle photo a Smith women appears discussing metaphys ics in a see-through shirt. Overall, Playboy seems to have had to stretch its qualifications to include women ' once attended a women’s college but are no longer attending, women who attend what was once an all-female college but is now co-ed, and women who have already graduated (and their alma maier can hardly be held respon sible for them at that point). Gives you the idea that women of real women’s colleges are intelligent and conscientious enough to steer dear of the likes of Playboy. When i Mills College student inter viewed visiting Playboy representatives for a story in the campus newspaper, she was instead encouraged to pose for the magazine. Mr. Cohen told her that “Mills College would be so proud of you for making a positive statement about the diversity of women." Despite the lack of representatives from the lop academic women’s institu tions of higher learning, it seems that Playboy did find some intelligent and conscientious women who were dumb enough lo lake their clothes off. Ac cording to a spokesman from the magazine, “Playboy believes feminism means freedom of choioe." It would seem the resounding choice made by college women of the SWs is “We’re fioi iniercstcd." Sman choice. Le Greenhouse Improvements Aren't Dear Editor, I would tike to express my dissatisfaction with the “improvements” of Le Greenhouse Caf6 On Caie Center). What are those so-called improvements? Heat lamps that keep previously prepared food warm throughout the day, taking away popular items like soup, fries and grilled cheese? Now commuters, as well as students trying to escape the cuisine of Belk Dining Hall, are forced to adhere to the hassles that accompany fast food restaurants. If we had wanted this we could have run across the street to Burger King to purchase wrapped up food that we cannot see until we buy it. 1 though Le Greenhouse was fir the students, not the' convenience of tnose that work behind the counter. How hard is it to make someof^ a fresh s;:ndwich and fry a basket of fries? Lee Connelly Iraqi jokes not funny Dear Editor, While walking back from dinner last night we happened to glance at a door on first Poteat. The following jokes were hanging on the door: Q: What is the most popular new rock band in Iraq? A: No kids on the block. Q: Why did Saddam Hussein shoot his wife? A: He caught her drinking a “Bush” beer. Q; What combination of numbers and letters eliminated the most Iraqis In a bingo game? A: B52. We found these )okes to be tasteless and nauseating. There is nothing to be found but cruel i^orance in jokes making light of the death and destruction of innocent children and adults. How could anyone possibly think this subject is funny? The people dying in Iraq are no less human than any "proud* American. When hit by a bullet or burned by a bomb explosion we all feel the same pain, and we. American, Kuwaiti and Iraqi, all bleed the same blood. We consider ourselves human beings before we even begin to think of our nationality. We suggest that you (the student(s) in questic»i] try to do the same. We find it ironic that those who are so quick to compare Saddam Hussein to Atolf Hitler are also the quickest to dehumanize the enemy—the same tactic Hitler used against the Jews. We acknowledge and affirm you right to express your opinion, which is why we dx>se to write a letter rather than simply ripping dovm your sign, (we mi^ add this has occurred to material that we put on our doors). We only ask one thing of you: Please leave an address where you may be reached in the future. If any bombs ever (all in our ountiy and the blood of our children is spUling in the streets, we would be interested to know if you are still laughing.
