Just like our federal government, excited knowing that I
Meredith's Student Government
Association (SGA) has three branches.
The executive branch is the SGA
Executive Committee. The legislative
branch is comprised of the Student Life
Committee (SLC) and Senate. Ihe judicial
branch is the Honor Council. Each
student is represented by the class
president or dass representative to these
committee, but now eacdi Meredith
student has an extended c^poftunity to
be 'in actual voice on one of these
comnuttees.

Sarah Walker, a junior, applied last
year for SGA Secretary. Sarah helped
with handbook training, freshman
orientation and Alcohol Awareness
Week. She also participated in
discussions and dedstcms concerning
the Honor Code, the dininghall, parking,
new dubs, and Middle .East support.
According to Suah, have really enjoyed
being a pan of the SGA Executive
Committee. It was interestifig to be a
part oi the dedsion-makirig process for
Meredith. Tlw secretary is lesponsible
for ths ininutM ind letter writing, but
also la an Impottant voice in the

Herald takes seven
awards at statewide
competition
First issue of tlie year wins top prize

The Meredith Herald won a first
prize at the inaugural convention of the
North Carolina Intercollegiate Press
Association, held on March 23 at
Campbell University in Buies Creek.
Meredith competed in seven categories
against other cc^leges in Division C
(enrollment of 5,000 or fewer). The
Herald won an award in every single
category in whidi it competed.
There were more than 200entries in
the contest, which was, judged by media^
professionals from die Oudiam Herald-
Sun, The Miami Herald, The Atlanta
Journal and Constitution, die Charleston
CSC) News and Courier, and College
Media Advisers, Inc.
The very first issueoaf the 1990-91
school year won first place in the
Appearance/Design category. The

place in the Overall Excellence category.
Pam Maxwell's “Ni^tmare on
Helms Street" cartoon took dwdpriae in
the Cartoons/Comics category. As not
enoughentries ^re received in Oiviscon
C, Maxwell's cartoon compened against
newspapers such as NC State's
Technician and UNC-CWs Daily 'ftr
Heel. Her award proves that Mocedftfa
can stand next to the "big boys.*
. Micy Beth Owen won second pbtoe
in the General/Columns categoiy for
her article entitied “Kicking the Habit,*
which dironided the life of a sdT^ .
professed nicotine addia trying to kick
the habit for one day. The judges
commented that the artide used an
"interesting format and reveats the ctisis
well."
Julia Haskea’s artide about apRieest
against Gillette for testing its pioducss
on animals won second place in theOlf-
Campus News category. The judges
noted diat "the story l^d is concise;
cafmires the reader's ^ntion and
features an unusual angle.*
A tiiird place award was piesenaed
to Haskett for her editorial iealing with
