’’Dead Again” Alive With Mystery and Romance by Kim Peeples Very fev things in life motivate me to think the way that a trip to the movie theater this veekend did. Actually. I had no idea hov this one movie vould make me think Between the suspensefui plot, the mys terious characters, and the overall theme of the movie, I was captivated from the beginning, Kenneth Branagh, a hand some English fellow, starred in the movie playing two different roles (so we think). His co-stars included Emma Thompson. Andy Garcia and Robin Williams. The basic storyline is about love, rein carnation and REVENGE (and it is good stuff), Not that I believe all of what was in the story, but I did walk away thinking about my life and the people in it. I will say that you have to get to the movie to see the very beginning-that’s where you find all the juicy bits about the plot. But stay tuned,, it gets better. Parts of the movie are in black and white, which adds to the essence of the movie. The mystery is not solved until the very end, at which point I knocked off my feet (it’s a true Alfred Hitchcock look alike). In the August 23 edition of the Weekend (the insert that the N6«0 put in our HeraldV the critics found it to be "one of the most original works to emerge this summer. " I disagree. It is one of the all time best movies I have ever seen. I suppose that because it isn t trying to solve any world crisis or make you wonder why you paid five and a half dollars to see it after you go home. Warning: it will evoke some thought! I would compare this movie, but by no means make it equal to, past movies that all of you movie goers may have seen. I think "Flatliners" made me think the way this movie did, about all the things in life. How about 'Always," where a man gotto say goodbye to his love before he left into the sky? And one that I know you ALL have seen—"Ghost." They each have similarities in dealing with life after death, but they don't touch the mystery and the romance the way "Dead Again " does. I hope to see it rake in the awards. And to all of you. I recommend everyone run out and see this flick, after all, there "s simply no excuse not to, considering it's right in our backyard at Mission Valley. Sports Meredith Volley ball Shaping Up For 1991-92 by Hannah Siiaondii This year's Meredith volleyball team is taking form, shaping up and perfecting skills in order to compete on a very competitive level, This year's team of players and coaches is working hard both on and off the court to ensure a winning year for Meredith volleyball. This year. Dr. Chambiee coaches the team, Dr. Bross serves as assistant coach, and Susan Smith enters her third year as team manger. The team consists of three seniors: Jennifer Allen, Kristin Horne and Ann King; four juniors: Diane Forbes, Kristi Narron. Susan Rigsbee and Beckie Hines; three sopho mores; Tricia Sparks, Holly Higgins and Carla Raynor; and three freshmen: Jamie Richards, Jenny Reynolds and JenniferThompson, Two of thisyear's juniors are transfers, Susan Rigsbee comes to us from Peace College and Coach Chambiee feels that she "is a good jumper and is a developing hitter,'" Beckie Hines is joining Meredith from UNC-Wilmington, and Chambiee says that her strengths are "good hands, blocking ability and strong hitting," The coach also commented on the im- port^ce of both senior Jennifer Alien and junior Kristi Narron, stating that Allen is the team s strongest returning hitter and she will be called upon to provide key leadership. Narron ha quickness, defensive skills and knowledge of the offense, according to Chambiee. which will allow her to make quick offensive decisions, Chambiee also adds that since the team has only had about ten practices since returning to school, the starting line-up has not been finalized, but she is quite optimis tic about a winning season. Since four key defensive players from last year's team are not returning. Chambiee says, "defense is a focus for us right now," While she feel that this year's team is ""hurting defensively," she is quick to add that the team is "stronger in hitting and serving than last year’s team." Therefore, she adds, "the focus early on in the season will be on basic skills and offensive e and defensive systems," In addition to doing their best on the court, the team also has to focus on academics. Athletically speaking. Chambiee feel the schedule this season is more challenging than last year, as they will be competing in three tourna ments as opposed to two from last year, One positive aspect of this year 's sched ule is that Meredith has made an effort to Stress academics, thus making the schedule less stressful for taking care of academic matters. This effort has been accomplished by changing from tri-matches to dual matches, and all overnight games are scheduled on weekends, The academic considerations that are given to scheduling reflect the commitment of the college and coaches to ensure that Meredith athletes are given every opportunity to excel both athletically and academically. This year s team has already showed a strong commitment to making this year "s season one to be proud of. Coach Chambiee encourages atten dance at all of the matches not only to support our fellow students, but to boost team moral and watch an excit ing and intense game, The team invites everyone to come see the Angels in action this week on Satur day, Sept, 7 at 11:00 am.
