MEA Fall Fast a Success
1 amara Seamone, right, and Mend enjoy Fall Fest
Thank You,
S6AI!1
To: Ann Hiott and the
Student Government Assoc.
Thank you for declaring last Friday,
September 20,1991 as Student Advi
sor Appreciation Day. The outcome
of this event was veiy successful, as
could be seen by the smiling faces of
the Student Advisors who received
balloons, cheery notes, banners, and
other special gifts from the “Meredith
Community” in recognition of their
hard work and leadership. We would
like to thank you for that recognition
and for setting aside a special day for
us. We also hope that this new event
will become a cherished tradition that
will be anticipated for years to come!
We appreciate your thoughtfulness.
Thanks again!
Sincerely,
Student Advisors and

On Sunday, September 22, MEA spon
sored Fall Fest on the Meredith island.
Allison Walker and Nancy Snyder were
co-chairs of the event. Two bands, Plain
Day and The Boneshakers, performed,
and Domino’s Pizza and beverages were
available for those who attended.
Although attendance was low, Snyder said
the event was a “good first try.” The en
tertainment was excellent; Plain Day per
formed a wide variety of music, from The
Who to REM to The Black Crowes and
Modem English. The band featured a strong
lead guitar and a dynamic, energetic per
formance. In addition. Plain Day employed
many diverse back-up instruments, such as
tambourines, trumpets, and keyboards.
The Boneshakers had a harder, more in
tense sound; besides popular college tunes,
they covered Devo, Led Zeppelin, and Nine
Inch Nails. The band also performed a
comic, rather than risque spoof on rap mu
sic.
Fortunately, the weather was beautiful,
and along with good pizza, music, and
friends, they day was enjoyed by all.
Writing Center Ready to Help
Offers more than advice on English...

“A fate worse than death.”
“The end of the world.”
“As much fun as pulling teeth.”
Most Meredith students, when asked if
they could draw similarities between these
much clinched horrors and writing papers,
would probably answer with a resounding
YES! Yet, as ctistasteful as the thought may
be, formal essays are requisite of almost
every class offered here at Meredith. As a
means for the teacher to gauge a student’s
comprehension of the material and for the
student to exercise and improve her own
writing and organization skills, no assign
ment is more suited to the task of education
(and maybe torture) than the dreaded paper.
Fortunately for us, however, writing papers
need not be so stressful, no such a chore - not
when the Writing Center is available to help
us with more difficult aspects of composi
tion.
According to an article written by thought
Jennifer Hardin, tutor, helps student in the Writing Center
the Writing Center was helpful, said that she
didn’t think she would have done “half as
well” on her papers without her tutor’s help.
What will the Writing Center tutors not
do? They will not write your paper for you.
Nor will they proofread your paper for
grammatical mistakes thirty minutes before
the assignment is due. But they will offer
suggestions on how to strengthen introduc-
