Dr. Trible speaks at Convocation
by Sonali Kolhatkar
The Staley Distinguished Christian
Scholar Lectures were held October 1 for
the Centennial Convocation. Dr. Phyllis
Trible, a Meredith alumna, was the visiting
lecturer. Dr. Trible is a Baldwin professor
of Sacred Literature at Union Theological
Seminary.
Dr. Trible is internationally known for her
expertise of feminist studies in religion.
She is the author of several books, includ
ing: God and the Rhetorip of and
Texts of Terron Literary Feminist Readings
of Biblical Narratives. She has been a fac
ulty member at Wake Forest University and
Andover Newton Theological Seminary.
Her lecture dealt with the premise of
women in the 21st century who have an
active interest in religion. She stressed the
ideas of women and their roles in the pa
triarchal narrative of the bible. She joined
her love of the Bible and her scholarly views
to form interpretations that impressed
Meredith’s faculty and students. She stressed
the importance of the role of a woman, and
that God created the best last. Dr. Trible*s
neo-feminist view brought a standing ova
tion from the audience. Dr. Phyllis Trible,
Class of 1954, is by far one of Mere^th’s
most accomplished and distinguished
alumnae.
