^^bvtmSer 11,1991 (Page two Editorial hy Jessica Cook Like other respected women’s colleges such as Maiymoimt, Queens, Salem, Agnes Scott, Hollins, and Mary Baldwin, Meredith , College should allow its students the privilege and responsibility of male visita tion. A restricted male visitation in the rooms of Meredith students from one until f:ve p.m. on Sundays is a reasonable proposition; implementaticwi of this policy would also improve student attitudes toward administration and Meredith school poli cies. In 1987, an imipressive proposal by the Meredith College Senate to have male visitation at Meredith was dismissed. Ar guments presented in this proposal for mulp. visitation were intelligent, thorough, and solid; the arguments still apply to today's community. For example, firet flow "dat ing" parlors are not private and are imper sonal. Also, students watching television on first floor parlors while couples are present may feel uncomfortable without a date, the ban on male visitation fosters resentment toward Meredith from those who want to entertain male friends in their rooms; as a result, many e?q>Fess the desire to live off campus. When fomilies of Meredith students visit the resid^ce halls, older brothers are forced to wait in first floor parlors if the family gathers in the student's room. Opponents of a male visitation policy menticHi security measures as an inqxjrtaot consideration. Male guests, however, could be checked in and out on Sundays by stu dent vohinteers from each dorm. Ifsftident security is vahied so highly that males cannot visit friends in their Mer^di dorm rooms, why do Meredith women often have to walk to their dorm rooms alone fr(»n parking lots surrounded by dark woods? Students often cite the absence and unavailability of security guards at late hours. Meredith students are just as responsible, trustworthy, and mature as students at Marymount, Queens, Salem, Agnes Scott, Hollins, and Mary Baldwin, six women's colleges dut respect a students' freedom to hjave male friends in her room. Meredith students deserve to be treated as adult col lege women with the male visitati(m privi leges enjoyed by other modem college women across the country. English Department to Offer American Literature Course The efforts of a group of students have paid off because this ^ning semester, an African-Ammcan literature course will be offered tor the first time at Meredith Collie. African-American Literature will be taught by Dr. Jean Jackson, who stressed that the course is ‘^for anyxie wiio’s inter ested in learning more about African- American liter^ure.” Dr. Jackson emphasized that the class will fulfill the pc»t-Englisfa 201 litera ture requirement which is usually met by American or a foreign language literature. The class will be a survey course which will move chronologically from Af rican slave narratives of the late 1700’s to very contemporary Afiican-American writings. There will be a particular focus (XI the f^lem Renaissance of the 1920’s and 30's. Dr. Jacks(»i added &at the class will include such writers at Frederick Douglass, Langston Hu^s, Ralph EUiscm, James Baldwin, Maya Angelou, and Toni Morrison. African-American Literature is li^ed as English 941A and will be tau^t Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-4:50 p.m. CORRECTION By Jack “Crazy Legs” Huber I cannot tell I lie. Craig Green of the Art department was really our coach. All of the plays run were actually holographic images projected on the field of play. While the credit for astute play calling has been flattering, Dr. Green and his system deserve all the credit. Interested underclassman are encouraged to contact him if they are interested in using the system in next year’s intra-miunl com petition. ■l/.vv,////.’ Managing Editor Kelly Parker Publication Editor Amy La Voy Copy Editor Jessica Cook Business Manager Jane Kennedy Advisor Nan Miller Features Editor Amity Brown Club Events Editor Kendra Neese Photography Editor Julie Smith Staff Suzanne Averette Betsy Mao Gilda Boyd Trista Schagat Sonali Kolhatkar Meredith College 3800 Hillsborough Street Box xl33 Raleigh, N.C. 27607-5298 (919) 829-2824 Printed by Hinton Press, Mebane, N.C.
