fDecmSer 6,1991 pa^e tHree Security Installs Emergency Phones In an effort to improve student safety, ten **Blue li^t” Security phones have been placed around campus. These phones are actually radios. Students punch the button, and security is contacted and made aware of which phone was acti* vated. Ifthe student needs to speak with security, she can hold the button down» wait a few seconds while the box identifies the loca tion, talk to security, and then re lease the button to listen to security. If a student is unable to talk secu rity will know the location and can activate the receiver so that they can hear noise in the surrounding area. These caller boxes are at the following locations: 1. By the health center 2. Near the exit next to Ridgewood Shopping Center 3. On the road to Faircloth Street 4. In the lower area of the new paHcing lot 5. Next to the lake in the new parking lot 6. On the road next to tile music buikling 7. In the parking lot near the Alumnae House 8. On the new road near the curve 9. In front of Cate Center (in the parking lot between Cate and Gaddy-Hamrick) 10. Behind the gym (above the riding rink) Security hopes that the students will use these phones if someone is following them, they lock their keys in die car, they have a flat tire, they need their car jump-staited, they want someone to know that they are walking up from the parking lot alone, they need to get in the resi dence halls after lock-up, or if diey see someone suspicious-looking lurking about campus. In a further attempt to improve studem safety, two crosswalks have been added. One is by Hunter on the way to the gym, and the other crosswalk is by the music building. Hopefully, these crosswalks will remind drivers to slow down for pedestrians. Along with parents and children, many students came to watch their friends perform. The Aqua Angels performed for about thirty minutes before they wrapped up the program swimming to Lee Grwnwood’s “God Bless the USA.” The Aqua Angels put on an excellent perfor mance, and their talents and hard work made for a capti vating show. Dr. Goode and Dr. Burpitt, visited Charlottesville, ’ Virginia and the suirounding areas on tiie first weekmd of November. IBD visited Montpelier, Monticello, Ashlawn, and the campus of the University of Vir ginia. The touts primarily focused of the historical and architectural elements that are studied in imerior design. While design students were at Monticello and Montpelier, they were able to experience the reno vation process first hand. Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson, reflected the influences of European architecture. Many students noted Thomas Jefferson’s symmetric designs, including that of UVA. The main lawn of cam pus is symmetrically designed with columns lining each side of the lawn. Students learned of many interesting traditk>ns during the tour ofUVa. For dinner Friday night, the gn>up dined at the well-known Aberdeen Bam. Some students had the op portunity to experience campus life while at the University. IBD’s future plans include at tending the NC Student Design Rally in the spring. The rally will be held in High Point on March 22- 24. Opportunities include plant touts and lectures on design-related areas. Granddaughters' Club Meets to Make Ornaments by Lori Watson The Mae Glimmer Granddaugh ters* Club met on Nov. 11 at 8:30pm.
